Hen with Swollen Eye

I havent seen any black crusty sored on her though
Yes,but there are different types of fowl poxes out there i believe.Ill do a little research and see what i can find.
Ouch.

How long has it been like that? She might have lost her eye. Hopefully, someone else will chime in soon.

ETA: Before her eye got to that condition, did it start out watery? Does her nose run?

I also agree to the possibility that her eye may already be gone.

Your probably going to have to drain it it,Maybe one of the other chickens just pecked her eye and now its swelling is there liquid in the bubble that you know of.

Yes and yes, which is why im worried its a respiratory infection of some sort and her eye is still there. I bathed it in warm salt water with cotton balls today and it opened a little while i was doing so- enough for me to glimpse at her eye. Its just so swollen around it and its hard. It doesnt seem pussy, except a bit of discharge on the very edge on the outside and also from one of her nostrils on the same side but i cant see any puss inside the eye.

also could be a common bacterial infection, something got in her eye and now it is swelling over that object.
Oh dear Im not sure what it is really? But how would i drain it? If its hard would there be no chance of draining it?
There is a possibility it is a upper respiratory problem as well. You would drain it with a syringe butif it is hard i would not do any thing. Here is a list of possibilities.
  • Viral
  • Bacterial infections
  • Fungal infections
  • Respiratory infections
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Nervous system disorders
  • Developmental disorders
  • Genetic problems
  • Signs of unusual behavior are:
  • Not acting well
  • Weak
  • Poor appetite
  • Sitting in a corner, fluffed up
  • Not roosting with the rest of the flock

I have had two roosters who had something like this going on ages ago.

However, that eye needs to be treated quickly. It is looking like that is 'hardened pus' in the eye, and especially since her eye started out watery, it is likely a respiratory infection of some sort. Is she eating, drinking? Is she mobile at all? That pus needs to be removed asap or she can either go blind or lose her eye. One of my roos lost his eye to this, and trust me, it wasn't pretty.

Yes, it will be gross, but it needs to be done. But, I would first suggest cleaning around the eye. Try to flush it out as best as you can, you can even try to rinse it out with warm salty water before attempting to remove the pus. By the looks of her eye, you might need to try and squeeze it out. Be very careful and use q-tips if you can.

Heres some links that should help you:

Once the pus is removed, you need to find some sort of drops to put in her eyes daily until the infection clears up. I have heard that Terramycin works well, but I haven't used it myself. I got some Brolene eye drops (I'm pretty sure that's what it was) and it worked on both of my roosters. But, it won't work if the pus is in the eye.

I would also suggest giving the hen some fresh garlic to help fight the infection. Cut up some small pieces of (fresh) garlic and give her a couple like a pill, I would also suggest adding garlic, honey, and ACV to her water.

Goodluck! Please keep us updated, too.

The Vetrx can be bought at any Tractor supply, and a local feed store may have it too. It can't hurt to be used, in addition to the advice above about draining the eye. It does look quite severe. Poor girl! I hate when we can't help our animals feel better right away.
