We are on 10 acres and though my chicken coop is 420 sq feet and my pen is 1200 sq ft, my flock has been free range for the past 11 years. The neighbors dogs some how have gotten threw their fence on a couple of times, and it has occurred when I am in town babysitting my grandson's. I told my husband the night this happened that the only thing I could do was to keep them in the pen when I am away. The way our property is set up , the pen doesn't get any sunlight and it's usually , in the spring/fall/winter months, a muddy mess, and I don't like them spending all that time stuck in it. We also have lots of trees/woods, but those trees and woods also help my flock stay camouflaged from the eagles/hawks.
Other than keeping them penned when I am gone, I might look into some kind of fencing that allows them more access to the sunshine/property.
