Hens lay fertile eggs without Rooster?

I am old school. If a roaster is not present with a hen, her eggs will be and are infertile. That is a fact!

I have read something that indicates that a female can actually develop male parts out of necessity to go on (in a group of hens) I know that this is documented in the animal world as possible in somes species (hermaphrodites in humans as an example) I believe that the will to make life go on could be strong enough that anything could be possible. ;) My two cents

If the functioning ovary is damage for some reason, a hen can develop rooster characteristics, but she will still be genetically female. She may breed the other hens, but the eggs will not be able to develop into chicks.

WE HAVE HAD OUR GIRLS 7 {HENS} FOR 3 YEARS NOW. WE HAVE NEVER HAD A ROOSTER!! OUR RHODE ISLAND RED HAD A HALF HATCHED BABY CHICKEN STUCK ON HER BOTTOM. BY THE TIME WE NOTICED THE BABY WAS DEAD. WE WERE SHOCKED AND VERY SAD THAT THE LITTLE THING DID'NT MAKE IT. WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE CHICKS WITHOUT A ROOSTER!!

I have had chickens for about 50 years and never had that happen. (I am an old lady) I do have roosters in some of my pens and not in others. I do hatch all of my chicks usually in an incubator but have let broody's hatch eggs. I have never had a chick hatch from any of my girls that don't have a boy with them. Some of the girls in those pens will go broody once in awhile. I have let them set on some eggs but usually end up giving the unhatched eggs to the crows. The crows chase away any hawks that come around so I like the crows. Good luck and have fun...

Okay, so I looked this question up. Because I have a hen that has been sitting on the nest all day, and we got rid of the Rooster about 8 months ago if not more. For some reason all my hens like to lay in the same nest...they have 5. And she has kicked everyone out. So can a hen get broody without a Roo?
