I figured it wouldn't be long before one of my pet peeves surfaced on this thread. I am an insurance adjuster, been so for over 20 years and my parents before me. Insurance companies are always made out to be the big bad guys when they really aren't, at least not anymore so than any one else. They are profit companies not charities. They are entitled to make a profit. We don't "cheat" our insureds. We pay what we owe under the policy....no more and (PAY REAL CLOSE ATTENTION HERE) no less. Are there some bad adjusters out there? Of course, same as with every single other profession out there but they are far outweighed by the good guys, like me and my coworkers who are out there every day doing everything we possibly can to get coverage for our insureds and to get their claims paid.
The next time someone out there wants to grump about their insurance adjuster please consider this. My job requires me to climb on three story roofs with 12/12 pitches in the middle of winter when it's 15 degrees out. My job requires me to work those same roofs when it is 108 degrees out. Crawl under houses when there has been a sewer leak. Go into neighborhoods that are crime and gang infested. Enter foreclosed homes and be accosted by squaters with guns. Try to explain to someone who is screaming and cussing at me that there isn't any coverage for their loss or our insured isn't liable for their damages. Always be on the lookout for fraud which is prevalent and costs the industry over $5 billion every year. It's endless. It's a mostly thankless job with a fair amount of health hazards attached.
The best thing anyone can do, and the easiest, is to just read your insurance policy. If you don't understand it, make your agent explain it to you. It's not the insurance company's job, nor mine, to know what you have covered and don't have covered. Read the policy.

Every time I've ever head anyone complaining about their insurance, the issue was usually with the particular agent or adjuster. My family has been using the same company and agent for 3 generations now, because they take care of us. Lets just hope he doesn't think about retiring anytime soon.
There are good and bad in every business, if you don't like your insurance people by all means SWITCH!!! Unfortunately, it usually takes something bad happening before you find out that you got a bad one...
I think too many people are going to these fly by night companies to get their insurance because they are cheaper. Cheaper usually translates to "oops we don't cover that". Our family has been with the same company for over 50 years. We have used the same agent's office although the actual agent has changed a couple of times due to death or retirement. The agent I have now is AWESOME! Always available to answer my questions and has no problem meeting with me on my schedule even if that means meeting at 6pm. She is actually more of a friend than agent!! I always say if your having a problem with an adjuster CALL YOUR AGENT!! That's what you pay them for. They are supposed to be there to help you!
