Thank you so much - very excited about this new adventure in chickening

Even if you build one and use it as your hatcher it helps so much to have a second one. If I could build 2 of them with no experience in wiring or building anything then you should have no problem.

Funny how after you do a few you are not constantly checking to see "something" is happening even though there is nothing to see. This time around I check the temp and humidity, turn the eggs and I am done in less than a minute. The weepers I would ditch. I don't think you can save them.

Yeah hahaha that is true...I do same as you do what i have to and it doesnt get exciting now until day19

Candled my 100 eggs last night and this morning on day 14. Threw out 15 clears are stopped developing. Down to 85 now. Lockdown Thursday the 13th and hatch the 16th. This is going to be another staggered hatch. They are all developing at different stages. This happened with my last hatch. Took 5 days to hatch all the eggs. Any ideas why this happens?

I cant tell you why this happens but wow that's alot of eggs!

I wish I could do that many!

Welcome to the group!! The same happened to me. I bought a dozen eggs locally for my first hatch and 9/15 hatched. The next round I bought 12 shipped eggs and only 1/15 hatched. I really think shipped eggs suffer.
Thanks for the Welcome! I am really wanting a higher percentage this go round - just like all of us!

This is my 8th hatch ALL shipped!
My % of hatch on shipped has been about 25% no matter if its in my Hovabator or my Genesis so its for sure the shipping...however Guess i complained so much the hatch gods finally gave me an 80 % hatch last one lol.
WOW 80%!!! I am really impressed by this!!!

How many days in transit on your last hatch in comparison to your others, might I ask?

Taking a stab at this. Here's my theory. When a hen sits on the eggs she rotates the eggs outward and then back in again. So the ones at the center are pushed outward and the outside eggs are pushed towards the center. This way the eggs are all exposed to various temperatures throughout the incubation process and in the end it pretty much equals out. Even though we maintain a constant 99.5 (hypothetically speaking) I would think the eggs towards the center are going to be warmer, even if only by a slight degree, and the ones towards the outside will be cooler. When we turn the eggs we shift the position that they are in but do not move their actual position in the bator. They stay in the same area of the bator for the entire process. I may just test this theory on my next hatch to see if it has any effect on the hatching time.

What day do you go in to lockdown is it day 18 or day 19 I've read both dates so thought I would ask xx
My first time and what the breeder (who I bought the incubator from & gave me some of his eggs) told me to do was day 18 and sure enough, just about on the mark at day 19 I had my first hatch out. He called it right in saying the speckled sussex tended to hatch at 19 days, all three ended up hatching before day 20. My two welsummers hatched out during day 20 and the langshan hatched out day 21. I assume, him be a very respected breeder with lots of expereince knew "his" chckens and/or breeds. My understanding from him was that there is kind of a norm per breed or at least he knew his breed lines and the norm. for them.

But I am very new to this and maybe others with lots more experience and chicken knowledge can chime in about the whole breed specfic thing..
