The first Wellie just hatched, and still nothing from the other egg yet...no peeps, no pip, nada. But still lots of time left, so I'm not giving up on it yet!

I am terribly afraid that something is wrong with the 2nd BLRW chick that hatched a little while ago. I've left it in the hatcher to "coach" the Wellies out of their eggs. But as I was watching it a few minutes ago, it looks like there may be something wrong with it's neck. It won't hold it's head straight, but rather holds it sideways...with one eye looking straight up in the air and the other looking at the floor. It doesn't appear to be in any pain, so I'm hoping this will work it's way out. Could this be caused by how the chick was positioned in the egg? I've never seen this before, and it's really scaring me. Just the thought of having to put this beautiful baby down just tears me to pieces. I'm obviously not going to do anything tonight...gonna leave it alone and see if rest will fix the problem. I sure hope so...I really don't want to wake up tomorrow to find it worse.

Michelle,

Hopefully the little one is just a little cramped like you said from being in that egg so long! By morning, hopefully she will be good as new!!

Thanks Vicki. I just took it out of the hatcher and put it with it's sibling in the brooder. They're just so precious. The older chick immediately went over to this little fella as if to say "Hi, where ya been?" They both fell asleep next to each other. I massaged the little guys neck, and the side of it's head that faces the floor almost looks "smushed"...maybe from how it was lying in the egg. I just hope that it wasn't cramped that way inside the egg for too long, or else it's little neck could've actually grown improperly. We'll see tomorrow, I guess.

I know now why you will have an empty bator just waiting for eggs

Good luck !

Shell....i hope your little one is just fine! i'd have a crick in my neck too if i were all squished up!

All was quiet last night...everyone rested and slept.

I just checked on the BLRW chick...it's still got a problem, but not quite as severe it seems. It's still keeping it's head held sideways, just not as much as last night. I was noticing, too, that the eye that faces up is staying closed. I took a warm towel and washed the eye, and it did open...but just a tiny bit. The chick just won't keep it open. I think that may be part of the problem, too. Otherwise, it tries to groom itself and it's walking around as best it can...kinda hard to walk straight with just one functioning eye. I'm gonna do some research online and see if I can find anything.

The Wellie is doing just fine...soooo quiet compared to the BLRWs! I put it in the brooder with the 2 others, and they're all snuggling now.

No action from the last Wellie egg yet, so keep your fingers crossed still.

Well, the hatch is officially complete. I have 2 BLRW and 1 Welsummer. I just had this gut feeling that the last Wellie egg wasn't going to hatch, so I took it out tonight and candled it. This time I could see inside it, but saw no movement and there was no response when I tapped on the egg. But I'm very happy with what I've got. My one little "Special Ed" BLRW chick is doing much better. It's just got some type of eye problem...can't/won't keep it open. I've started another thread about him. But otherwise, everyone is doing great. I'll post pics tomorrow...I've got to get some things done around the house tonight since my son is asleep early. Check in tomorrow to see some absolutely adorable pics!
