Heritage & Exhibition Turkey Thread

Our Porter poults are due in early May! If they look as good as what we have seen others post, I am going to be pleased! Narragansett, Blacks and Jersey Buffs.

I would like to start raising bourbon red turkeys some time but for now I have order just 10 regular hatchery turkeys to try out and then I will move on to actually raising them. I like this thread.

I received in the mail today a beautiful tray of Beltsville White eggs. Thank you, sandspoultry! Can't wait to get started with my new breed.

What variety did you order? Though they are hatchery poults, you may still show them. You may even win a few shows. Jump in and get your feet wet!

I got 16 eggs. I have previously had problems with turkeys getting all the way to hatch day and then dying in the shell. Does anyone know what this is from or what I could do to prevent it?

I would like to breed naragansetts--but I'd like to start with good quality breeding stock. When a big hatchery was having problems with the hens slow to hatch (and not having a way to process) I "chickened" out of the Narragansett order.

I thought that because the Narragansetts are a local (I'm just over the RI border) they might sell better than other turkeys.

Are there any other good breeders of these turkeys besides Porters???? I'd rather buy poults than do eggs at this point.

Thanks for listening.

I always thought cackle hatchery is a good place to get Naragansett. They have been raising heritage turkeys way before they where called heritage turkeys. They are one of the few hatcherys (privett is the other one) that hatches there own birds.
