Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Have you got a light bulb hanging near them?

Scott
In 2 of the three coops. The third 2w x31/2d x4h
one has electricity but the cockerel of the pair
keeps pecking the light until it goes out so I had
to remove it.
Best,
Karen

Karen, I can't remember what your power availability is, but on another thread ChickenCanoe discussed using ceramic heat emitters in situations that require supplemental heat without light. Here we pile more straw on the floors, and the birds snuggle down into it and make themselves a nice toasty bed, but it hasn't been -40 either. What about getting one of those insulated boxes like Dragonlady uses and putting it inside the coop if you can find one small enough? Or build them a temporary enclosure out of that foam insulation board that would fit inside the coops? Sorry you are having to deal with this, hopefully all will be well, it won't get as cold as predicted and your birds will weather it like champs.

I love my double walled boxes. I stuck a Min/Max thermometer in one the other night when it got down to 18 here. With 2 cockerels in the box, and bubble wrap over the scat hole , the low temp was 45.No lights.I am very torn though about putting in a 40 w. bulb, because we are forecast for 10, and minus 1 with 35 MPH winds on Tues. We did put up 50 feet of clear , nylon reinforced tarps to the West today. They will let the sun in, if any,at least.........Would you believe that 3 more 5 month old pullets came into lay today ? Crazy girls.

All of my 2013 pullets and all of my hens are laying like mad here. People at the show were complaining that they have not been getting eggs at all. I get tons of eggs here and there is no additional light for anyone. Although even in the summer with 3 months of over 100 degree days in a row here I still have eggs everyday.

YUP. Says volumes.

The subtlety does not escape me!

I bred SL Wys for years from Herb Holtz . They laid up a storm. I've been amazed at these US x UK crossed buffs. They lay at 5 months , and keep on truckin.
