Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Subtlety is not my strong point, but that darned rabbit suits you , and is cute as the dickens.
Well...that's good enough for me and the 'Rabbit'!

Hi everyone- Mom works for a crown agency that deals with specialists for agriculture - The only grain that there poultry specialist recommend is whole wheat - year round. Whole wheat has roughly the same nutritional content as poultry ration so you can mix it directly into the feed.

I don't give my chickens anything special and we see temps of -25 C to -30 C for a good portion of winter. So I really don't think any additional grain is necessary
Colin...I'm bored and feel like taking just one more run at you...lol

If you had fed just a bit of grain to those SASSOs, perhaps their feet wouldn't have frozen off!

Alright, so I lied. Im "kind of preparing." We have an 8x8 pen in the garage we use for chicks, it won't stay warm enough. Some Dec 8th chicks are spending the night in the heated breezeway for a couple of days.

I do not blame you. I would to.

We made some minor preparations. We put plastic over a few windows, but not all of them. We are not going to get as cold as some.

All I raise are Heritage Breeds and I've had them for years. I take my breed specs from the Livestock Conservancy in Pittsboro N. Carolina. I did have many more when I had huge losses from coyotes when we moved to our new place back in August. Now our coop is secured I've been planning on getting more pullets about Easter time. I have large breed Rhode Island Reds and Light Brahmas. I lost my big RR Rooster so I must have another before I can start hatching more chicks. My mother had a small flock of these marvelous birds and I'm thrilled when my 9yr old twin girls come running inside with an egg off the lawn just like I did when I was there age.
Our Annie with her favorite young Light Brahma Hen.
I hope Soon I'll have gotten another Rooster and started some eggs or I can get you some hatching eggs. I'm just out to promote my breeds! I'm a former nurse and Comm. college English Teacher so the history of these wonderful animals is really important to us! Susie Q

It is great to have you here!

Do you show yours? Your twins are old enough for 4-H and that is a great place to learn.

I added a couple of haybales at my open air spots on the coop and put down dry leaves on top of the frozen bedding. That was the entirety of my preps for this cold. My group are used to an open air coop and low temps, though only a few of this flock have weathered temps as low as those coming tomorrow. I don't expect any problems as they are well acclimated.

Talk about adding insult to injury! Now, at 1:45 AM, it's 55 F. And by 7 AM...it's supposed to be 9 with windchill factor of Minus 18.

The roads are surely gonna' be messy because it's raining hard and blowing. I foresee downed power and phone lines around here, complements of ice, freezing on the lines. OH, JOY!!!

This could be very scary for people who depend solely upon power from those lines...

Praise be to Marcellus Shale!

That's weird - it's 36 degrees here in Tucson at 1 am - colder than it is where you are. It will be different by morning. I do not envy your cold weather with wind. Stay safe, everybody!

Most people have electric heat pumps here in SC. There might be a party here...I have natural gas, and a whole house generator.Learned my lesson 44 years ago, when I was iced in to this town for 2 weeks, with my 4 month old son, while visiting my parents. Then came Hugo, with no power for 3 weeks here, and 100 degree heat.I decided that misery is optional.

I agree - After Miserabelle hurricane I installed generator to run most everything and when we moved and built new house it has full house generator and 1000
gal propane tank [ no natural gas located here ]. No power is bad enough but no heat or water [well]really increases the misery . Hot water is propane and back up heater is propane. And when I built the garage and barn last year we ran a emergency electric line to both from house to run freezers.
It was good insurance because we haven't had to use it over four hours at a time yet. LOL

Can I bring the kids, or should I leave them at home? JK
