Colin...I'm bored and feel like taking just one more run at you...lolHi everyone- Mom works for a crown agency that deals with specialists for agriculture - The only grain that there poultry specialist recommend is whole wheat - year round. Whole wheat has roughly the same nutritional content as poultry ration so you can mix it directly into the feed.
I don't give my chickens anything special and we see temps of -25 C to -30 C for a good portion of winter. So I really don't think any additional grain is necessary
Alright, so I lied. Im "kind of preparing." We have an 8x8 pen in the garage we use for chicks, it won't stay warm enough. Some Dec 8th chicks are spending the night in the heated breezeway for a couple of days.
All I raise are Heritage Breeds and I've had them for years. I take my breed specs from the Livestock Conservancy in Pittsboro N. Carolina. I did have many more when I had huge losses from coyotes when we moved to our new place back in August. Now our coop is secured I've been planning on getting more pullets about Easter time. I have large breed Rhode Island Reds and Light Brahmas. I lost my big RR Rooster so I must have another before I can start hatching more chicks. My mother had a small flock of these marvelous birds and I'm thrilled when my 9yr old twin girls come running inside with an egg off the lawn just like I did when I was there age.
Our Annie with her favorite young Light Brahma Hen.
I hope Soon I'll have gotten another Rooster and started some eggs or I can get you some hatching eggs. I'm just out to promote my breeds! I'm a former nurse and Comm. college English Teacher so the history of these wonderful animals is really important to us! Susie Q![]()
I do not blame you. I would to.
We made some minor preparations. We put plastic over a few windows, but not all of them. We are not going to get as cold as some.
Talk about adding insult to injury! Now, at 1:45 AM, it's 55 F. And by 7 AM...it's supposed to be 9 with windchill factor of Minus 18.
The roads are surely gonna' be messy because it's raining hard and blowing. I foresee downed power and phone lines around here, complements of ice, freezing on the lines. OH, JOY!!!
This could be very scary for people who depend solely upon power from those lines...
Praise be to Marcellus Shale!
Most people have electric heat pumps here in SC. There might be a party here...I have natural gas, and a whole house generator.Learned my lesson 44 years ago, when I was iced in to this town for 2 weeks, with my 4 month old son, while visiting my parents. Then came Hugo, with no power for 3 weeks here, and 100 degree heat.I decided that misery is optional.

Can I bring the kids, or should I leave them at home? JKMost people have electric heat pumps here in SC.
