I know blood and tripe have been lauded for a long time as great for birds.
Just never met anyone who was doing the blood thing. How do you store and prepare it? Does it give your birds
red poop or stain their vents or feathers?
Thanks,
Karen

Dear Brahma breeder,
Calf manna is high in protein AND several vitamins and minerals. It is pricey, but you only feed 2Tbsp/day/bird. Also, Red Cell is high in iron, wheat germ oil is high in E, and cod liver oil is high in A&D. The Rooster Booster brand offers several different supplements, and Manna Pro also makes a " flock fuel" which is high in essential fatty acids. Whatever the cause, I hope your chickens' fertility soon returns.
Best wishes,
Angela

Twin City Poultry has a product that might help

It is not too expensive either.

Which brings me to some exciting news. I found out last night on another BYC thread Greenfire Farms
was explaining they had imported Light Sussex from Europe in 2013. They are from the Swedish National
Champions. GF has eggs in the incubator now. This is exciting news. I can' wait to see pics of the birds.
Best Regards,
Karen
They posted some pictures today on FB.

Blood is very easy to deal with. In a 35 gallon tub, I add about 15 gallons of seasoned water, get it boiling, turn the heat to medium and start slowly pouring is the buckets of blood. It clots and forms large pieces like chunks of liver. When it cools, I load it into 3 and 5 gallon buckets and put the marked containers in the walk-in freezer. I usually have three tubs going at once.

I season the water with garlic powder, Old Bay Seasoning and Kosher or sea salt.

This past year, I cooked the green tripe, thinking it would be easier to deal with but I was wrong, and next year, I'm going to serve it like I used to...ground and stored frozen in 10 pound packs. I've been mixing it in with their main meal but going back to distributing it to the flocks like treats, hands full at a time...only raw. I was pleasantly surprised to see that others are using it too!

Plus..uncooked is much more beneficial for the birds.

EDIT: The cooked blood looks like cooked liver and doesn't stain butts or beaks!

Digested blood comes out black a very good indication of bleeding ulcers or TOO many Oreos and milk (had to be gross huh?) LOL red colored/blood in stool indicates lower (large intestine) problems JFYI

I don't feed 'em straight blood...it's PART of their daily diet. Their stool looks like regular chicken s**t...even a bit smaller than some I've seen.
