Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

I am working my way through phase I also, I already know I will not be a breeder as no cocks allowed, but I'd love to have great hens..

gjensen...I really hope this is one of those'100 year' variety of winter. The kinds of serious temps. and actual windchill factor was/is deadly, even to young strong birds. Some were doomed from the beginning because the loving owners thought additional heat provisions but with little or no provisions for ventilation. So many lessons learned over the last couple months that from now on....The experiences will pay big dividends to those who got ruffled a bit.

Happy Valentines day to all ...Big wet kisses to all the ladies and a pat on the back to the men...Enjoy life...warm or cold, it's over entirely too soon!!!!!

That is correct. A lot of new people into poultry learning the hard way. A good way to learn, though the birds may not agree.

I will admit that I will make a few minor adjustments both with my home and the birds. Mostly for our convenience, but not entirely. I have taken our mild climate for granted. It is good to get a wake up call like this. Better than getting it when it is even worse. Always a possibility.

Happy Valentine's day to you to.

And no, we are not here forever or even that long. It is healthy to consider that.

I prefer taking a pair of scissors and cutting right down the center of the toe webbing. I've read that the holes left by toe punches can rip and be a nasty mess.
I have yet to mark a chick, so I don't know. I am assuming that it gets caught on something and rips, and then as a larger adult it would/could be a problem? But if it is OK to mutilate this part of their body as a chick wouldn't it also be OK as an adult? Would a free range, rough and tumble environment prevent more opportunities for a toe punch hole to rip?
