Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

I have yet to mark a chick, so I don't know. I am assuming that it gets caught on something and rips, and then as a larger adult it would/could be a problem? But if it is OK to mutilate this part of their body as a chick wouldn't it also be OK as an adult? Would a free range, rough and tumble environment prevent more opportunities for a toe punch hole to rip?
My understanding on the matter is when done as chicks it doesn't really bleed(which I've found true with the splicing thing ) and as an adult it still can be done just it would bleed more and hurt more( not 100% on that last one ). If it gets spliced then it can't rip but if you toe punch then it can rip, bleed, and look nasty.

I prefer taking a pair of scissors and cutting right down the center of the toe webbing. I've read that the holes left by toe punches can rip and be a nasty mess.

Don't know where you read that but I've never heard of it. I've toe-punched chicks for 50 years & have never had one rip at all let alone be a "nasty mess".

@ NanaKat and LindaB220...thank you both and all the others who have wished us well. !!
That your son? He's a big dude, marines are probably happy to have him on there team.

My dad was in Greek Marines think he was sergeant or a lieutenant in the Greek Marines. I am not close to my dad and I prefer my mothers side.

Yes, my son. He's 6' 3" and carries 235 pounds but does not look that heavy in person.

EDIT: He has seen done things that I hope no other American's child has to see or do. I tried

to pay him not to join and the Military is still trying to pay him to re-up. Knowing what I know

now, I really wish he had accepted my first offer. But we all know what is said about wishes.

I have been lurking on this thread mostly since last year trying to learn the difference between backyard chickens and heritage birds.
Now I am ready to purchase a trio of Buckeyes. Who would you all reconnend I buy from? I am not going to show birds but I would like some that could be called SQ.
Laura Hagarty is out of birds for the year already...

Has anyone heard of Chris McCary? He is the president of the American Buckeye Poultry Club and I was thinking of buying a trio from him.
