Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Bringing this thread back to Heritage Large Fowl:

My Black Java breeding program took a backwards turn today. I had to kill my largest, best-looking cock. This leaves me with only one cock. I do have a few chicks from the recently dispatched bird, so maybe his type-related genes are still in the flock. It made me sad to kill him. I will miss seeing him around the yard. Unfortunately he flogged me one too many times. I won't miss the bruises and scabs. He made the best soup I have ever eaten.

While I was at it I also butchered the smallest five-month-old cockerel from last fall's broody hatch. I was surprised to discover that his testes were more than twice the size of the testes from the much larger, much more aggressive cock. I would have thought it would be the other way around.

Hopefully a couple of those sons, will not inherit the loose screws.

I have been figuring the problem was upstairs and not downstairs.

LOL...No it's all in the details.
Best read on an empty stomach !

Yup, I considered a poodle too. Can't remeber now why the std poodle was crossed off the list. IT is very much like the CCR, so a std poodle could get put back on the list. THank you.
we found our standard poodle crossed with something on "PetFinder" and she has learned without being taught, best dog !!!!! Put poodle rescue high on your list. She is learning not to bark at the wild turkeys, she originally thought they were predators.

A good beagle is hard to beat but they are incurable roamers. I'm an ol' hound man and the beagle sits high on the list for some purposes but hardly serious guardians.  One trouble is, if they get something running, they will follow it across state lines, never looking back 'til they have run their leg clear off!

I've always heard that Beagles have a white tip on their tail so you can see them as they wave goodbye.

CBR is Chesapeake Bay Retriever

Better be an ALPHA !

:D   I've raised 3 wonderful rotties. Yup, better be an alpha. lol

I am open to suggestions on working dogs or sporting dogs. NO hounds, no terriers, no toys. No rottie, no golden, no German shepards. Looking for a working dog: obedient, watchdog, fetches, agility.

ANyone have experience with CCR?

Best working dogs I have that aren't lgd's are tervs... All around great at everything except being an lgd. Protective and intelligent and intuitive. Breed Champions who are also herding, obedience, agility, and tracking champions.

I love them because they have dimmer switches... a lot of dog when you need it, but can chill out next to your chair when you don't.

That's an interesting dog-- though based on all my reading the tervs fall into that extreme group that is very protective.  Can you suggestion a breed that is more moderate, a watchdog type rather than protection type. Remember I live in Massachusetts!!  lol

Lol... My lab would eat an intruder. My Tervuren would lick them to death. ROFL

You need to not look for a specific breed but a specific type of breeder. One who breeds for the specific temperament and qualities you are looking for. Temperament testing of pups at the correct age is critical for proper placement. I even had my Maremma temperament tested when they were 7 weeks old and would not tell my buyers which pup they were getting until after all the testing was complete. And I know it drove then crazy, but after months of grilling them to determine exactly what their lgd needs were i was determined to put the correct pup in the correct home or to even turn folks away if there was not a good match. And I did... One of the pupsi placed was going to be a lot of dog. I turned away more than a dozen prospects who desperately wanted him because I knew they wouldn't be able to handle him through his teenage stage.
Find a good breeder and the test will take care of itself. It's like raising livestock... I don't raise livestock, I raise forage... The livestock simply convert that forage to food fo me.
