Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

If you google A2/A2 milk, you'll find tons of information. But the quick synopsis is, there are 2 types of beta-casein, A1 and A2. This is the same casein that's talked about in gluten-free casein-free diets, and is what causes the intolerance in lactose intolerant people. The research shows that A1 milk is the "potential" cause of a whole host of ailments, diabetes, Crohns, etc. A2 milk is supposed to prevent or potentially cure those ailments(not too sure about "cure" in this statement).

Lots of foreigners say that American milk makes them sick, and it's been linked to the A1 milk produced by Holsteins. Some say it also causes a different taste in the milk.

All goats and human mama's breast milk is A2. That's why kids that are lactose intolerant do good when breast feeding and on goats milk, but not on store bought cows milk(My wife was one of these kids). She also claims that storebought milk has a funny taste, but loves our fresh milk.

Like I said, there's lots of info out there. You'll have to read for yourself and maybe future research will prove one way or the other.
I had not heard this term before A1 and A2---- very interesting.

Are goats and sheep both A2?

While I stay on good terms with one of my best friends who has mostly black/white-faced beef and dairy (Holstein) cattle, the only use I have for any beef is for eating the meat (and of course, things I've mentioned before). I drink and use quite a lot of goat milk ....pure, sweet RAW Goat milk !!! While our herd is not as large as it has been in the past...it will be much larger next year.

I intend to cover all the 2 and 3 year old does with our pure Saanen buck from Caprikorn farms, I intend to AI (with help from Dairy Cow friend) at least three yearlings with stored semen from Top 10 bucks from the old Shagbark herd. Saanens produce extremely well as do the Shagbark Toggs. Looking forward to seeings Kids next year!!!

Even when we had over 40 milkers, I and my wife really enjoyed hand milking them. It's therapeutic. When we milked, around 5 AM for morning shift we only spoke when we had to because that 'personal time' for us both. We also took the time to go over the udders and all parts of the goat on the stand.

RedRidge...I could be wrong but I'd bet you don't hand milk? If you did, you would have to use a 'Haz-Mat' suit...Heck, you night have to do that any how.

As far as I'm concerned, I'd just as soon cozy up to that raunchy buck as to a sheep......The funk of either has to 'wear off' since it certainly can not washed off!!!

THe foods we eat have far reaching consequences IMO-- and for me I don't drink milk anymore at all because the sugar count is very high. CHeese is a whole nother matter. If I am understanding the A1-A2 concept correctly, it maybe time to ditch the sheep of 25 years, and bring in goats. Food for thought. lol

I've never heard of them but that doesn't mean a whole heck of a lot. Have you hatched eggs before? Shipped eggs are almost guaranteed NOT to hatch as the postal service is so rough with them plus they get shipped in a non-pressurized compartment in the plane belly so it dramatically affects the air cell. If you can wait for day olds from him, I would. However, do your homework first. Find customers and talk to them. His site says this variety is "coming soon" so find out possibly where he is getting them from. Or, hang in there and we'll see if someone knows someone who has good ones and is a reputable breeder.
I have hatched shipped eggs befor and my best hatch rate was 50%....

Maybe/Maybe not. Here's a link to get the genetic test done. If you have a pure A1 flock, then maybe switch to A2 sheep, or goats. It may be worth testing a few or all fo them to find out before replacing everything. Edit: Here's a link in more recent articles to the UCDavis testing facility https://www.vgl.ucdavis.edu/services/A2Genotyping.php The link below has been used by a dairy owner that I bought raw milk from but they haven't updated any posts since 2012. May try calling before sending money. http://emineral.info/a1a2/genetic-testing/

Knowing nothing about cows, what is A2/A2?

All sheep are A2/A2...
This fact, combined with the smaller molecules and several other interesting tidbits I won't bore it with, is why even those who are allergic to goats milk can drink sheep's milk (and eat sheep's milk cheeses).
Many people make the assumption that goats and sheep are similar and very different from cows... In reality goats and cows actually have more similarities and sheep are very different - not only in their nutritional requirements, but also in the components of the milk they produce.

I used machines when I wad milking hundreds a day. I now milk by hand - both cows and sheep. Ironically the cows are much messier. The sheep deposit only small marbles. .. And. .. When calm and trained to milk never make a mess when being milked... unlike cited to go tens to go whenever they get nervous or the urge strikes them. ;-)
