Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Any Okies on this thread that sell Heritage fowl???

If so, what breeds and where are you located? I would definitely be interested in a breed with the following criteria;

1) Large brown egg layers
2) Broody
3) Good free rangers
4) Heat tolerant
5) Cold tolerant
6) People friendly - but this one is not a deal breaker, while the rest are.

What breeds match?

I do not think this fine gentleman is far from you.

Javas do well for us here in North Texas.

Hi,

What about heritage Barred Plymouth Rocks? I was reading a real pioneer's diary a while back. The lady was in Colorado and had a nice flock of Plymouth Rocks. She lived in the mountains. I know the hatchery Plymouth Rocks wouldn't answer, but there are some lovely vintage Barred Plymouth Rock flocks out there with a heritage back to the days when birds earned their keep.

If it gets real cold where you are, consider the rose comb variety.
Best,
Karen

Thank you all! The Barred Plymouths are gorgeous, I've done some reading on Buckeyes and like them, not familiar with Javas, but I'll do research!

Hi Karen!

Thanks for the article!

BPRs are single comb. If it has a rose comb, it is a Dominique or non Standard Barred Plymouth Rock.

Dominique would be a good choice, but the eggs are a lighter color usually. @Alaskan picked up some of them this season and loves them. I do not know how well they do in the heat though.

I had two BPR pullets from a hatchery and they did not like it when the temperatures went over 100 here.

If they didn't like 100 in Cali, they certainly won't like it in Oklahoma :) Our humidity is enough to rival coastal areas at times.
