Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

It is like Ron said, you can mix the chicks, if they are strong enough to handle the hustle. I do not like to mix my chicks that are more than a week's difference. Many are satisfied with up to two weeks.

I may just keep it beside the brooder in a dog cage. Just for a few days in case it needs more heat. (which it will of course) The storeroom is 80-85 usually.

I don't know. I have not been on it. It sounded like they only wanted experts on that thread...

I've been over there a bit lately. Depends on the topic thread. Some of them sound just normal. Others are a bit more
straight-laced. I think the idea over there is to have a platform where it reads more like an APA symposium than a poultry
swap. I haven't seen anyone thrown off those threads
because they weren't highbrow enough. I have seen folks
gently coached to use proper APA terminology. But I don't
think that's a bad thing. It's always easiest to participate
in an organization when everyone is using the same etiquette.
Best Regards,
Karen

Mixing age groups is not a one size fits all, which is often the case for all things poultry.

I do not like to mix age groups for reasons like being able to compare "apples to apples". I have, and will again, for different reasons.

The hang ups with mixing age groups comes a little farther down the road. For example cockerels "finding their way" a little later. The younger birds are not on an even playing field. Also things like growing in their feathers at different points etc. There is the possibility (here and there) that the birds growing their tail feathers later may be subjected to extra picking. These are some reasons that I like to stay within one week if I have to mix at all.

Most of the hang ups that could come along with mixing age groups (though generally it will be fine), can be countered by additional space. Extra space cures a lot of evils concerning growing poultry out. If inferiors can get away from superiors, etc. Plenty of space and plenty to do, keeps individuals from being focused on as much. Many "behavior problems' can be solved by more space. The more active the breed, the more space they may need.

Stress of any kind can lead to problems. Animals are like people in this respect. I can have an aquarium of mice get along fine for 6 months. If food and water is removed for one day, suddenly I have cannibals. Too bright of lights are stressful, and stressed birds act out. It is survival mechanisms that get "turned on".

Any Okies on this thread that sell Heritage fowl???

If so, what breeds and where are you located? I would definitely be interested in a breed with the following criteria;

1) Large brown egg layers
2) Broody
3) Good free rangers
4) Heat tolerant
5) Cold tolerant
6) People friendly - but this one is not a deal breaker, while the rest are.

What breeds match?

Australorps from a Breeder--They are APA so they can be shown and win at Poultry Shows.

Go to my SOP Australorp thread and see if someone is close to you. Also, The State Thread is very busy and would be a good place to check:
