Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Agreed. On that note, when you do Wazine with the chicks, how do you administer it? If you add it to their water, do you allow them to drain the waterer over a course of days, or do just give them access to it for a 24 hr period?
My chicks are in a huge Rubbermaid water tub in my greenhouse when they are wormed. I am paranoid about birds running out of water , so I keep 2, one gallon waterers in with my babies. On worming day, I remove one, and add the Wazine to the remaining one.If the babies finish that water off in 12 hours, I give another dose that will last until morning the next day, so they get 24 hours of Wazine.

This is a hen not of my breeding. I acquired her a couple of years ago. She has really nice feather quality compared to most of my birds. Her tail feathers are wider and so are her wing feathers. Her primaries are in great condition. Her tail is a bit messed up from the nest box but other than that she has great feather quality. She also has WAY TOO MUCH fluff! Her hock joints don't show at all. Due to her feather quality, I will use her. I'll have to check my cock that is in with some other hens right now. If he will help correct the fluff issue, I'll cross him over her. He won't do anything for her lacing though so that breeding will be for type and feather quality only. She's been getting the same food as all my other birds for the last two years so I don't think this issue is food related. I will be going through my birds and making some selections.
Lacy, if you have a single hen with good feather, you have a way to work your way out. Even if she isn't perfect. That would be a fun project all on it's own.

The cock I was considering I think would definitely help in the fluff department but his primaries are pretty shabby. He didn't even have to open his wings for me to see it. I have another cock that has type similar to hers and also has fantastic feather quality. I'm thinking I may use him with her just to get more birds to work with as an insurance policy of sorts. After I have chicks from that cross, I will use the male with nice tight and short fluff.

I would like to see pictures of them Lacy.
He is supposed to ship when they reach 6 weeks of age so they'll still be young but WAY better than anything I currently have. I won't be giving up on my current birds though. I'll slim way down on them and keep only the very best but I'll be keeping them. I've got way too much invested in them to do otherwise. I'm talking about my time, effort, energy, thoughts and dreams. They were in much better shape before I moved here. I'm slowly getting my buildings and circumstances rearranged to suit my needs and so hopefully I'll be able to get back on track. Besides, once I have perfect birds on the place, what will I have to work on? I HAVE to keep the old ones.

I would not give up on them either Lacy. I would want to continue working with them just for the challenge, and the learning. I might be tempted to let someone cross the fence somewhere along the line though.

Interesting- a few pages back they were too small & now they're "perfect". You do realize Jamie has John Hayes birds [including the ones I gave him}.

Yes, I realize they're the same birds... and I believe I told you at some point along the way that the birds I received were small. I didn't say they were all small. I believe it was more than a FEW pages as well. I was also referring mostly to lacing and whatnot when I called them perfect. Hopefully feather quality too.

What makes the Axial feather so special? I see the Secondaries and the Primaries.
It looks to me like the Axial really ought to be a Primary. Why isn't it? Does it do
something special?

I hope this isn't from the SOP, I copied it from another BYC post by nicalandia.
What makes the number 9 feathers so special they get their own number?
Just because they are the leading edge of the wing? Do they need to be specially
constructed or something?
Thanks,
Karen
