I pour a splash of ACV into a small glass with about a quarter cup of water, and set it out on the countertop. Later, you can rinse the whole mess of drowned flies down the drain and repeat as needed. I have also removed potted plants from the kitchen. Angela

Hagar, find an expert breeder from your chosen breed to ask, they will know more about everything, as it pertains to our breed. I am too new to selective breeding to feel you should go by my advice, but since you asked, here is what I do. I have not been doing it long enough to prove if it is a good system!

Thanks for the excellent response Wisher. It is definitely helpful to see your process. Developing the eye for the top line, bottom line and other aspects of the breed seems to be the hardest. Though the whole concept and how they pass these traits along require experience. You have given me a good start. I have a little experience with livestock judging in the FFA. Bob's Feeds in Brundidge sponsored District Contests which included several types of livestock judging but no chickens.

Well we are slowly winning the battle with the fruit flies. Thanks everyone!

Things are moving along here. Getting ready to ship birds out. The hens decided to go broody on me this late in the season.

So 4 nights ago, I went out to check on them at night. Now the one hen has been sitting eggs forever. I heard this faint cheeping.

Checked the chicks in the small red coop. No, they are fine. A wild bird? Nope. Rounded the run of the big yard with the raised coop , it's louder. Son of a gun, there under the ladder where it had obviously fallen off the platform was a tiny new chick.

Poor thing . That hen actually did manage to hatch out a chick! It must have fallen out of the box and roamed around the coop ( or been chased out of the coop by the other hens) and fallen. It was cold and thirsty but unhurt. Took it inside , warmed it, and gave it a drop of Poultry Nutri-Dench. Soon revived and it it's own brooder now. Feather sexed it and it's a pullet.

Down says its going to have nice color too. This chick was really hatched "out of time" as I had closed my hatching season weeks ago. There will be no others, I destroyed the other eggs she was sitting. Just way too late in the season to be growing them out back here. What to do with this chick? Found a newbie with a mixed flock nearby who dotes on her chicks. She is taking her this week. and raise her to join her mixed flock. Happy day.

I love reading about your surprise hatches they amaze me. I do wish some of my hens would do that.
That's nice you found a home for the little one already!

I am waiting on some eggs in the bator to hatch. I only put 10 in and one was clear two have pipped so far.

Oh I so hope you get those special chicks you have been waiting for!

Today I finally got an inquiry from
a 4Her on chicks. Have been waiting all season as we always donate a breeding trio of started birds. I sure hope they
take them.

I love helping the kids get started. These folk were specifically looking for Light Sussex so that is a
good thing.

I love happy endings. Karen, I lost my little Basque and the only other one that hatched was a Coronation Sussex. She's beautiful. The seller offered to replace in Sept so I emailed him and he said that he has discontinued the Basque and the the Coronation Sussex cockerel is not fertile yet. (Lost the older one) So he has offered me for just shipping one dozen Swedish Flower Hens from Greenfire. Great huh. Next spring I'll be contacting him about the sussex. I miss my little Basque pullet because she was so friendly and not afraid. Buying hardware cloth this payday.

Yeah, I will start over on them this coming spring. Karen, I do have a question for you. I have one Coronation Sussex but she is not as big as some of the others. Do the Lt Sussex get bigger? I want to breed the biggest.

I would like to do that with some of my birds once I get some going.

I got my Buckeye's from Chris Mccary Sunday. He is a very kind man and has a lovely farm. DH and I really enjoyed our visit and I learned quite a bit from him and he told me I could email him with any questions I have. I got 2 pullets and 2 cockerels. They are beautiful!
