Hermit Crab Questions

As much as I'd love to have more than one, parents probably wouldn't (even though I'd be paying for and caring for said crabs) and I've seen things where they dismember/eat each other and kick eachother out of shells, so I'd rather not run the risk.

I understand that.
I hadn’t heard of them doing that, but it makes sense. One’s probably fine - as much as I read about having a group, mine never really interacted. Hopefully someone will have more information on this.

I gave mine about 1 hide per crab, but I’m sure they would have liked more. I gave mine drift wood to climb on and they loved it! I didn’t use fake plants, so I’m not sure about that one.
As for unsafe stuff, painted shells. Very bad. Natural’s the way to go with that.
Sounds good! Where do you get natural shells? When I looked at pet stores they only had plastic or painted ones.

Now for the ultimate question for you: You've been on both my threads. As a beginner pet (not a poorly researched pet for a little kid, just a pet for a beginner) would you recommend bettas or hermit crabs? Why?

I found them at little shops at the beach, the pet stores only seem to have the painted ones. The ones I got weren’t intended for crabs, I think they were meant to be souvenirs.

Both are a lot of fun, but I would recommend betta. Hermit crabs are, in my experience, really touchy and kind of hard to keep alive. The hermit crabs ended up being a lot harder than I originally thought, but bettas are a little more straightforward.
I’m sure you’ll do great with whatever you decide, that’s just my thoughts :)

Okay! Little shop at the beach is probably where I'd be sourcing my crab. We go to the beach in delaware and they sell hermit crabs that are free with the 'hermit crab house' that you can get.

Yeah...I'll pass -_- I know that it's not good to buy from those kinds of places, but there is really nowhere else for me to get crabs without shipping them.

That’s where I got mine and they did fine!!
Yeah...that little house is pretty much just good for transport.

I figured I'd use that little house for bringing hermit crab home and that's it. The problem is that we have a couple hours of driving-would it be best to get crab right before leaving and have tank set up before we leave, to minimize stress? Or bring tank with us to delaware? How would that work?
