Hey Grandpa, What's for Supper? Part 2

Hope everyone is doing fine, zoo, so you're still on soft food?? Isn't icecream soft food, how about donuts??

I have not been doing much but going through mom's things and trying to figure out how to get through each day without her. I have her cut out recipes(I'm picking up her cookbooks this weekend) I am going to make cookbooks for the family with her favorite recipes. My wonderful husband came up with a great solution to a dilemma I was having. Mom was a planner, she planned things down to what serving dish and utensils to use. So I will put a section in the book with her menus and party plans, ideas, and notes. She also had tons of recipes that she hadn't tried yet, so I will put in a section of Mom's Future Recipes. I have tried a couple of those so far. I have made ham and cheese pannini's with my olive foccia bread, fettucinni with ham and veggies, and refireid beans that I messed up (according to everyone else, I LOVE them !), I accidentally grabbed the jar of cayanne instead of the chili powder, I wondered why it was so light in color. When I went to grab the cayanne, and ggot hold of the chili powder instead I realized what I had done. I LOVE spicy things, so they are fine for me.

I found my grandmother's recipe for her famous chiffon cake!! I will make that tomorrow, I think. Last night was meatballs and penne, tonight is pigs-n- blankets, and corn. I can't do much more than that today.

Thanks Zookeeper. Congrats on your "catering" success and those new appliances!

I'd be excited too!

Last night was fun. Some interesting combinations and flavors (www.meltbarandgrilled.com in case anyone is interested). DH had the Parmageddon and I opted for the Purple Parma.

Tonight was a butterhead lettuce salad with a fresh herb vinaigrette, asparagus soup and goat cheese crostini.

BB - I don't watch cooking shows, so I don't know about Jamie Oliver's brick oven

. If it was manufactured, they can install thermometers that register higher temps. Since we built ours from "scratch", I'm stuck with more primitive methods until I "tame" the beast.

If I may suggest, when my grandmother passed my cousin scanned photos, recipes, newspaper photos of my grandfather, etc into her computer and gave a CR-Rom to everyone who wanted one so we all have the same memories.

Tonight we had chicken and rice, simple. And now that the little one is sleeping Im making pumpkin whoopie pies for my boyfriends birthday on thursday but he will get them tomorrow. Sorry camera batteries are dead

Jamie Oliver is the only cooking show I watch. The entire focus of the show is cooking from the garden and since I love to garden and love to cook, it's a natural fit! :) The best shows, of course, are the ones where he shows his chickens, which he calls his "girls".

There is a discussion on his website about his oven:

Aneesa's Muse Ahhhh! Someone else did Cinco de Mayo!

Thanks for posting that link, Backyard Buddies

I wandered around and checked out some of Jamie's videos, as well. There are some very nice recipes on the Orchard Oven site also ..and "..60 second pizza baking..." is quite a testament to how hot these ovens really get

We enjoy Jamie's show also. We even put a mini bbq in our herb garden, after seeing it on one of his shows.
We've been living off of my minestrone and homemade bread. Both of which came out very well. I didn't use barley as I had originally intended to do, because the barley hulls were to tuff. I fed them to the chickens. I added whole cooked oats to my bread, and that worked out very well.
SO made tortillas for tonight's dinner, accompanied by the noise of the police helicopter.
We live in a neighborhood with a strong mexican identity and the police always expect the worst. I didn't go to the cinco de mayo celebration today, because I was too broke to buy any of the good food they always have. I just didn't want to torture myself. SO's tortilla's came out quite nice and we were able to use some of our home grown and home made goodies. Besides, I have too many babies to take care of. What with my 18 chicks and 2 foster kittens that are still drinking from a bottle.

ams- That is kind of what I am doing. I wanted to print out books, but we have a big family and it won't be a small book. Putting it on a cd-rom would be a good idea, I believe that now we all have computers. If I do a book maybe I can get everyone to chip in for ink.

I am making sandwich rolls for meatball sandwiches tonight. DGD requested them a couple of weeks ago. I will be making sandwich bread also, so no cake today. I just remembered that I no longer have an angel food cake pan. I will have to grab Mom's this weekend.

DH bought me Kiko Denzer's book on earth ovens. DGD and I are going to build one this summer. We decided that we will make a small one for testing of building ideas. Then decide on the design and size before we build the bigger one. We are not sure how often we would use it, once a week, once every two weeks, every weekend??? So that will be the deciding factor. I am very excited about builing it. I am even ready for DH's remarks;he is a licensed contractor.

Wow! It's nice to see such a renewed interest in wood fired ovens.

I should check the Jamie Oliver site ... if I find time.

Our "beast" will stay quiet until Friday when I fire it up for pizza and focacci (My DD will be home along with DS and all their friends, as well as ours!). I want to bake several loaves of sourdough as well (and anything else I think of

) I have mushrooms I want to dry too.

Tonight was Russian ... kachapuri (mixed cheeses and eggs baked in a bread dough) and borscht. DH and I picnicked at the beach.
