Hey Grandpa, What's for Supper? Part 2

thechickenchick - great idea using string cheese!

My spoiled family likes mozzarella breadsticks, where you wrap sticks of mozzarella in bread dough and bake. I have to admit they are delish, but a major pia to make!

Monica - Thanks for the "thumbs up" on the Hilshire Italian. I'm going to pick up 2 tomorrow since they're on sale. One for now, one for the freezer.

I've been researching frugal menus and meals since the food prices are astronomical and I now feed 7 adults, since my brother just got layed off and my widowed Mom's investments are just about gone.

Here are a few I found useful:

Hillbilly Housewife
Chatelaine
All Things Frugal

My DH laughs when I (seriously) tell him we'll soon be like the Walton's with everyone here in the house, pulling together and pooling resources.

Goodnight John-Boy!

Thanks for the compliments.. Its a simple recipe Jim taught me. LOL It's a very versitile dish, add almost anything to it. Bacon, scallops, whatever.. lol
And it always tastes better with crackers crumbled up in it!
Glad Yall enjoyed it.

Oh yes.. have to add balsamic vinegar, definitely (the other vinegars are here for cleaning purposes, mostly) ..some kind of aged cheese (I like Asiago or Gruyere) even though I know it triggers a migraine

...soy sauce ..and a few others that are "must haves"

...I was trying to be brief

Oh.. and I don't know if anyone else was interested, but I did post that whole week of shopping list, recipes and so on ..pg. 17 in the recipe thread

Aneesa - don't hate on those lowly vinegars like cider and white.

If you drop the acidity of white vinegar from 6-4% you get a nice sub for rice wine vinegar and a good base for herb-infused vinegars for vinaigrette. Cider vinegar is awesome with pork.

I have to restrict wine and pork ..even though the wine cooks/burns off, mostly

Just out of curiosity.. how do you reduce the acidity? I'm sure it's a lowly chem experiment that I know like the back of my hand, but I can't recall anything, atm.

We had stewed beef with potatoes, onions, carrots and celery. I made homemade biscuits and fixed brown gravy in the stew. We also had sweet iced tea and homemade apple dumplings with ice cream. Yes I am stuffed

Aneesa - Wow on that week long recipe thing you posted. Great ideas! Thanks! Can't wait to play around with that.

It was a busy day here between laundry, helping kids with (more like helping kids stay focused on) some school projects, planning out my next soap making adventure, cleaning house, etc.

Dinner was, um, interesting.

I have no idea what to call it. "Clean out the fridge pasta", perhaps? It was roughly based on Spaghetti Carbonara. I sauteed some onion and garlic in EVOO and butter, added some chopped up leftover ham, added peas, condensed milk (I didn't have cream), some regular milk, the last of the sour cream (a few tablespoons perhaps), parmesan cheese, and some seasonings then stirred it into cooked fettuccini and served it with a salad.

I hate to waste anything. Usually my leftovers turn into soup, but I wanted to do something different for a change.
