Hey Grandpa, What's For Supper?

I am so sorry you had a migraine ...I am a chronic sufferer.. but that smoothie looks awesome!!!

I am usually hurl'y when I have a few days old migraine, so food is not my friend ...does the smoothie go over well for you?

I hope you are feeling better now!

Thanks--I feel a lot better today. I can't take any of those new-generation prophylactic medications for migraine (like Imatrex, etc.) because I have a dangerous reaction to them, so I have to rely on good, old-fashioned narcotics. If I can catch it early enough, Vicodin works fine. If not, then a trip to the ER for a shot of Demerol usually does the trick. The good news is, the older I get, the less frequent the headaches are. Now I only have a few a year. In my 20's, it was a few a MONTH.

The smoothies do sit nicely with me during/after a headache, as long as I don't include any dairy or sugar. The Montmorency cherries have some kind of compound (anthocyanins) that works as an anti-inflammatory, so that's a good addition, if you can find it. At my Kroger store, it's sold as a concentrate, in that little corner cooler where they have specialty juices (like POM) and tofu and organic greens. It's pricey, but not when you consider that it is a concentrate, not just juice.

Oh, and my fresh corn spoonbread turned out great last night! I can't imagine how good it would have been if I'd had fresh homemade yogurt and fresh-laid eggs to go with the fresh-picked corn!!

Ninja,glad your head is better,

I've never had spoon bread? corn bread? looks really good though , would love the recipe, hint hint, nudge nudge.

Tonight we are having leftovers. and i'm going to try to talk DH into going to a livestock auction i just heard about at the feed store.

It will be so awesome cause when i was little my uncle lived across the street from one and me and my cousins would go , The guy would let us sit in the loft and watch if we were quiet, it was always so exciting.

So i want to go tonight and reminisce.

I know Purr, that spoonbread/cornbread looks yummy! How did your mexican dish turn out? My kids ate the bottom out of that casserole!!! ALL gone!! Really good. Tonight we are having fried squash (battered in egg and cornmeal and tossed in oil to brown) steaks and diced potatoes (cubed and tossed with oil, salt pepper and parsley) and browned in a pan on the stove. Sweet tea....better go get all that started

We did a meatless meal tonight, too. My mother would never have served it because it was monochromatic!

Fried green tomatoes, homemade garlic/cheese biscuits, and leftover fresh-corn spoonbread from last night. YUM.

The spoonbread is from Southern Living, and was really good!

Fresh Corn Spoonbread EDIT to add: NOT THE SAME as cornbread! Much moister, like bread pudding.

MAKES 8 SERVINGS; PREP: 10 MIN., BAKE: 45 MIN.

1 cup white cornmeal mix (I used self-rising)
½ cup all-purpose flour
¼ cup sugar
1 tsp. salt

4 cups fresh corn kernels (about 5 to 6 ears)
2 cups plain yogurt (Gee, I wonder where one might learn to make yogurt?)

3 large eggs, Lightly beaten (Gee, I wonder where one might find fresh eggs?)

¼ cup butter, melted

1. Preheat oven to 350°. Stir together cornmeal mix and next 3 ingredients in a large bowl; make a well in center of mixture. Stir together corn and next 3 ingredients; add to cornmeal mixture, stirring just until dry ingredients are moistened. Spoon corn mixture into a lightly greased 2-qt. rectangular baking dish.

2. Bake at 350° for 40 to 45 minutes or until golden brown and set.

Scrambled set me a plate , yum yum and the mexican casserole was awesome DH can't stop raving about it.

Ninjapoodles that bread looks sooo good i'm going to make it tomorrow, do you think it will go with jambalaya , I hope so.
Thank you for the recipe I love the Pics.

I bought all the stuff to make the squash casserole ,making that on saturday.

I'm looking for a recipe for fried green tomatoes. cause I have a ton of tomato plants.

And I bought yeast and bread flour for when I get up the nerve to try a homemade bread.

I'm just going to have to get more animals to take care of so I can work off all these calories.
Next ducks then goats

Wow! That bread is beautiful! I have to try some when I can find some fresh corn from one of the local farmer's markets.

I'm glad your head is better, ninjapoodle! I wish my age had some bearing on the frequency of mine, but I haven't been that fortunate just yet. I'll have to look for this Montmorency Cherry concentrate when I get to WholeFoods next. I'll try anything to avoid the misery of these beasts.

I woke up with a right-sided cluster today ..unusual, so it seems more intense than my "normal" left-siders ...sooo.. we're having some stir-fried shrimp with a few cheater (read: frozen) veggies and steamed brown basmati.

June's Fried Green Tomatoes

Mix flour with salt & pepper. Taste. Should be flavorful.
Pour buttermilk in large bowl (not lowfat).
Cut green tomatoes in 1/2 inch slices.
Throw slices into buttermilk.
Heat large skillet with 1/2 - 1 inch canola oil.
Put flour mixture into shallow dish.
Put soaked tomato slice into flour mixture. Coat thickly on all sides. You can also redip in buttermilk and recoat in flour mixture for a thicker crust.
Gently place breaded tomatoes into hot oil. Brown thoroughly on both sides. Browner is better than lighter.
Drain on bed of paper towels.
Be careful. Family feeding frenzy will resemble a chicken/mealworm melee.

That spoonbread looks heavenly! I sometimes add cheddar cheese and chilis to mine, just to be different

Monte Cristo sandwiches for us tonight. DH is lucky with overtime this week and dinner is whenever he gets home, which means fast and easy.

Tried Tutters Zucchini recipe tonight. Kind of had to improvise since we did not have everything. We added and subtracted.... but WOW. It was good. We have zucks running out of our ears so I just used the search function and found lots of good stuff. They are now all printed out and we will see what we try tomorrow.

Thanks Tutter - it was great
