Hey Grandpa, What's For Supper?

No one in my house can abide a raw red tomato (and yet we love all cooked tomato products), but the green ones? That's a different story!

buttermilk, salt, and pepper--no egg wash in this version--OR, you can even skip this step

equal parts cornmeal or cornmeal mix and flour

YUM!! I don't like egg batter on fried veggies, and I'm torn as to whether I prefer the buttermilk method shown here or just dredging in seasoned cornmeal. If I was frying okra, it would just be dredged in a flour/cornmeal mixture and fried.

Purr, glad that casserole turned out good!! It is a kid fav. here!! And Poodles...coming to live with you...change the sheets in the spare bedroom and set me a plate..permanently at your supper table!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ninja- glad your feeling better, I woke up with one this morning. DR. just put me on inderal (generic-propranolol) only been taking it just over a week so no results yet. I average 2-4 migrains a week since I was 13. I took vicodin and soma this morning to take it away. At least I know what causes mine, I have degenerating disc disease in my neck. They say nothing but pain killers can be done about it.

Last night we had meatloaf, mashed potaoe casserole and corn. Tonight leftover mac-n-cheese-boxed, with red onion, ham, parmesean and mozzerella added.

This weekend we have a shooting match and it's our meeting and wedding anniversaries. Fri. night KFC. Sat. night we are having marinaded tri-tip and bacon-broccolli salad, and whatever catches our eye that other people bring. I am making a huge pan of apple cobbler also. Sun. pizza on the way home.
Hope everyone has a great weekend and I will be thinking and praying for all of you up north. Our whole valley is filled with smoke from the fires, I can imagine how bad it is up there. Keep safe!

I'm in awe of people who have a plan for several days' meals at a time. I just can't seem to get it together like that. It's almost 2:00, and I have NO idea what'll be on the table tonight. I think Bella and I are making some cheese, and if we have time after that to make dough from the leftover whey...maybe pizza.

Anyone got a good recipe for chicken pizza?

I hope the Inderal works for you. I've taken it in the past, but it was 20 years ago, and I can't recall how well it worked. Seems like I recall it helped me sleep, though!

I've got a question for you southern folks. First, no lectures.

I know I'm doin' this differently than you all do at home.

I had some smoked turkey sausage (yes, I know it's not what you'd use) and thought I could throw together a red beans, rice, and sausage dinner fairly quickly and without a bunch of fuss and all. But, what to serve with it? It has meat and beans for the protein and rice for a starch. Is there a traditional veggie that goes with red beans and rice? Anything else? I've done a google search and keep coming up empty.

I would absolutely use turkey sausage in jambalaya or a "dirty rice" dish! The things that pop right into my head as accompaniments to a dish like that are greens (with plenty of peppered vinegar) and cornbread...and maybe some chow-chow. Any kind of greens, really. They could take away my Southerner card for admitting this, but I'm not a fan of turnip greens or mustard greens too much, but I like spinach and Swiss chard and kale, etc.

If I can find a recipe and learn how to do it, I actually hope to devote one whole Narragansett to turkey sausage this fall. Actually, I'm kind of hoping I can find a processor to do it FOR me.

I did fry green tomatoes last night, but fried food is a rare, rare treat around here because of the health issues (and I know several Grannies who would scold me for having cooked my fried green tomatoes in Smart Balance veg. oil instead of bacon grease). Which is a shame, since fried chicken is about my favorite thing in the world. I'm still experimenting with oven "frying" chicken, looking for just the right recipe. It's like a quest for the grail.

UPDATE: Thanks to you planting the idea and reminding me to get off my butt, I learned with one phone call that my local butcher, who makes great sausage from deer, beef, and pigs, will also make turkey sausage for me if I bring him the turkey meat! Yaaaaay!

thanks for the 2 fried green tomato recipes I can't wait till they start coming in , They are only tiny right now.
Tonight DH is bringing home KFC cause I just got back from kayaking and i'm exhausted,
I did start a crockpot jambalaya but it will take too long so I'll cook it ,put it up tonight and have it for dinner tomorrow.

I was wondering with the spoonbread can i use frozen corn. cause its too early for good fresh here.

for desert i got up early this morning and made a batch of choc, chip pecan cookies, I don't care for walnuts as much as pecans.
So when we are ready for desert i'll put the cookies in the oven and then put a scoop of vanilla ice cream on a couple with fresh whipped cream on top. I'll probably drizzle some butterscotch on mine.
Chocolate chip cookie Sundea's yum yum
who says you can't have desert with kfc.

Oh, absolutely. And then the whole thing will only take you 5 minutes to put together and get into the oven! Beauty. We had bought our corn at the farmer's market, and I actually found myself wishing I'd used frozen corn for the spoonbread and saved the fresh stuff to eat off the cob!

Thanks Ninja and Banter. I think I can pull off those ideas. I'm trying to avoid driving my gas sucker to the store, so I'm making do with what we have around here.

Ninja - I had to Google that Chow Chow recommendation. I wasn't sure why you were tellin' me to serve it with DOG!

Thanks to Google, I now know what you're talking about.
