Hey Grandpa, What's For Supper?

When I make red beans and rice, I like to fry some cabbage with peppers and onions, sliced or shredded carrot, fresh ground pepper and a little sea salt. You can use bell peppers in any color you fancy and/or some slightly fiery ones ...whatever your tastes.

Y'all made my mouth water, talking about ChowChow. My Nannie made some of the best!

Smothered chicken with mushrooms and onions in the gravy ..just a hint of lime
Mashed taters with a light garlic infusion
Steamed broccoli crowns
Nannie's sweet tea!

Imagination dessert ..haha... I can't do all the sugar with the icky chest and nose stuff still lingering on.

Enjoy your dinners!!

WAIT! I have two small heads of fresh organic cabbage from the local FM in my crisper, and not a clue what to do with it. Can you describe how you cook the cabbage a little more? Like, sauteed?

Yep.. like sauteed. I just put a little good olive oil in a skillet and let it get hot. Throw in some sliced onions and various colors of "sweet" peppers ..maybe a little bit of one bird chile or a serrano.. (I almost typed Serama ..haha). Once the onion is aromatic, I add the shredded or chopped ..however you prefer it.. cabbage and carrots. You can hold the peppers back to add after the cabbage, if you prefer them crispier. Move this around a bit, until everyone is the consistency you want them ..grind some fresh pepper over this and salt to taste. (I love my red mineral salt, but will use sea salt if without it)

This cabbage can be tricked out a bit, if you want to serve it in a more ethnic manner ...like as a side for some great Jerk Chicken or other meat/fish.. just add a few cooked beans to it, as well. You can add garlic to the cabbage, too. And, if you still want beans and rice with this, cook some coconut milk into them ..give it a little island flavor!

Now, I want some black eyed peas and chow chow, too!! I think my appetite is coming back!

Somebody wanna send me a jar of "good" ChowChow? I can make my own, but nothing is growing in back just yet ..so I'll have to wait too long!

I can send cold cash or we can work out a barter of some sort... handmade jewelry or a birdhouse or somethin'

Holy cow, this kind of dish never would have occurred to me in a million years. I've only had cabbage in slaw, pickled, or in stews. I think I'll thaw out a venison steak for tomorrow and try some of your cabbage ideas! OMG, am I planning TOMORROW'S dinner?

I have pizza dough resting, chicken breasts roasting, fresh mozzarella made and chilling, and I'm about to go put together some tomato sauce for the pizza. I sure wish I had some fresh spinach.

Hmmmm...now I'm considering whether an Alfredo sauce might be better for the chicken pizza. Decisions, decisions. Ah, tomato is healthier.

Made something called "Cevapcici" It is a recipe out of the former "Yugoslavia" cylinders of ground beef, pork and lamb well seasoned and grilled on skewers, served with fried onions and peppers and a yogurt cucumber sauce...all stuffed in pita bread! It was yummy!
We are getting an exchange student from Montenegro in August, so I was looking for recipes from his homeland!

I love cooked cabbage! That's a great sounding recipe.

Cheryl - The Cevapcici sounds a little bit like Gyro's, which is something I've made before (and loved!). I'd love the recipe for the Cevapicici when you get a chance.

Tonight is another lazy night. Just threw some deer sausage on the grill. I like mine almost burned. Sliced up a squash with some onions, garlic and sea salt on a piece of tin foil and threw that on the grill as well. (Lots of throwing going on at my house).
Anyway it was good. Deer sausage grilled and dipped in mustard is about the only way I eat sausage.

If I keep reading this thread, I'm gonna leave my husband!!

Leave him behind, that is! LOL I need to be back in the country QUICK!! I'm missin' all the good venison ..harvesting green tomatoes NOW ...making chowchow, and other canned goods, with a kitchen full of crazy women friends ...and as many darn crowing chickens as I want!!

I can drive a tractor and a few other things ..anyone wanna adopt me? This city livin' ain't for me!!

I'm kidding about leaving the DH behind, of course ...but he better get a hotter fire under his butt cuz I'm ready to go!

Great cooks think alike! Tonight I served Red bean and rice with fried cabbage, cornbread, and left-over pinto beans. Salads work with red beans and rice too.
Had a millionaire pie for dessert.
I add Italian sausage into my red beans and rice...I fry my cabbage in oil, but add a generous dallop of bacon grease, after it gets good and soft (wilted), I pour in 2 cups of hot water and boil till so tender it almost falls apart. I season it, but I don't spice my cabbage up because my red beans and rice are spicy.
My company left this evening after supper, feeling just a little tired.
But my hubby brought me home 75 more lbs of tomatoes.

I think that describes my attitude pretty well tonight...
well, I've got to climb in bed so I can get up early.
Ya'll come.
