Hey Grandpa, What's For Supper?

Sounds easy but time consuming . . . and tasty! I bet that it takes just moments to have them with dinner.

Can you do the same thing without using the bacon? Sometimes I love adding greens to soup and the bacon flavor may not go with all the soups I do this with.

Thanks Yogi. If I ever get the chance to try them I certainly will. I do love veggies, I like kale cooked with cabbage and mixed in with my mashed potatos....kind of like an Irish Colcannon. We are missing out on so many things here, but I am thankful for fresh seafood and other local produce we get. I wonder if mustard greens would do well in our climate. Do your chickens get mustard greens too?

According to my Sunset veggie gardening book, mustard greens are a cool season veggie. Too much heat will make the leaves tough and strong flavored. It looks like it's pretty quick growing - harvesting at 35 - 40 days after sowing the seeds. You might be able to pull off a harvest before the summer heat sets in!

I LOVE greens with seafood. I buy them in the bag at Trader Joe's but would love to try to grow them and process them myself. This was what I was thinking about when I asked Yogi if they could be made without the bacon. A steamed bed of greens topped with a nicely seasoned piece of fish makes for one yummy dinner!

Wow, those do grow fast! Thanks for the info, I am going to the garden center in town in a few days time, I'll look to see if I can get my hands on some and give them a try. We only have a few really hot days during the summer here and when that does happen we all act like we are going to die. lol.

LOL. I know exactly which days you're talking about! In fact, I seem to have a knack for coming through that area just when those days hit. I was in Wilsonville the summer before last and it was 105! 105 in the Portland area??!!! We have a lot of family up that way and it seems that it's always hot when we're there. We have an RV and usually stay at the big park there in Wilsonville. They have an indoor pool and my kids always want to go swimming. When it's 105, an indoor pool room is the LAST place you want to be!

Good luck with your greens shopping! Let us know how it turns out.

Baby limas, corn on the cob and a grilled chicken breast. (Unfortunately - all came from the grocery store frozen section.) I am almost completely out of home grown stuff. My freezers are almost empty. Well, except for boiled peanuts and blueberrys but they are not quite complete supper material. LOL

Red beans and rice (the REAL deal) and cornbread. That's the extent of our menu for tonight!!!

OOh, OOh, I forgot: Fruit and walnut salad from McDonald's for dessert....I love that yogurt, none of the other stuff tastes the same.

yum, red beans and rice with cornbread. Are you from the South? I'm from TX. I was elated last weekend when DH and I went out to try a new restaurant which served fried catfish with cornmeal batter. Noone else does it like that out here, it's all beer batter, which is just not right.

My son has been very, very ill. (He got out of the hospital recently) so we canceled our "Anniversary Trip" till he is better.

I have not been cooking much lately...obviously with the hospital...but since we've been home been working on putting in wood floors in the parsonage....so I fixed frozen prepared chicken with the fixings last night for supper. Looking forward to this evening....oh yes lunch....sandwiches...we are almost done! I'm climbing over the couch and recliners and etc...to fix meals...
It's for a good cause...
