I'm a newbie member here. We just recently moved up here to Washington & decided to get ourselves some chicks. Being city dwellers in California we couldn't exactly have any, esp. Roosters. So with now having 5 acres we're not only in a country part, but have the space. My Family and I (My mother, father & my son) did a little chick shopping. My mother did some reading up on which were the best Brown Egg layers with docile personalities (do to my son) & we went to our nearest Farm & Feed store. So our first bunch were (2) Rhode Island Reds (3) Barred Rocks. My son and I would like to maybe get into "show" so we did a little more research on other type breeds. My mother found a couple she'd like to have as "show", my choice & well my son just kind of ended up with the non planned ones we wound up bringing home. The next day we drove to Monroe to their Farm & Feed store. I was in Chick Heaven! Babies,Babies everywhere! We started out with a specific List! But it didn't work out that way.
We pretty much got (2) of each breed we wanted, minus a couple that only got 1 & 3 of. (2) Buff Orpingtons, (2) Golden-Laced Wyandottes,(2) Blue Sumatras (show)-but 1 died recently =( ,(2) D'Uccle Bantams (show)- but wound up with 3, since "porsha" as we call her has the cutest lil face, that you couldn't help but take home. -- these were planned. BUT we wound up taking home as well: (1) Russian Orloff, (1) Silver Lakenvelder (show?),(1) Iowa Blue, (2) Silver Duckwing Old English Bantams (show),(2) Black Old English Bantams (show?). My mother wanted some of the "rare" breeds, but think the Chick Fever kicked in for her.
The 19th, a set of Silkies were supposed to be in and my mother really likes the Silkies. Personally I think they are the goofiest looking birds, besides the Polish. So we went to get her Silkies & when we arrived they said they never came in, because they were shipped the wrong birds. Which come to find out were Frizzles!! YAY!.. the other breed we wanted, esp. me. I had a Frizzle once which I loved & adored.. but when I had to move back to the city from the country, my lil bird started crowing in my ear, so that totally killed the whole being able to take him to the city. =( So needless to say, even tho we didn't get the Silkies, we wound up with ones we still wanted... so took each color of those - Black,Blue,White & Buff. Black one became my sons,Blue is mine (BlueBelle), the other 2 of course are my mothers. hahaha
So far it has been a very interesting experience & fun at the same time. We are still learning about them for what we can kind out & is available. Sadly we did lose my Sumatra =( Shame for such a future Gorgeous Bird & she/he was very sweet. Do to me losing my bird, my mother decided to just let me have the one she chose out of the (2).. =) But considering out of all the lil babies we got, loss of 1 isn't too bad, so we're thankful for that. I hope to learn loads from everyone & share our goofy en devours so far. =)
