yes it was. We as a country went from a global power to a country to be taken notice of. We broke the back of the Japanese who ran rampant all over the east and china with 2 bombs... Yes, they awoke a sleeping giant and got slapped, but I am talking about a different sort of advancement.. inventions that were driven by necessity of war, that have more practical uses today... rockets being off the top of my head.

One thing that World War Two did NOT have is this amazing story.

A black man (not sure if he was slave or free) was fighting for the Confederacy as a sniper, concealing himself in a tree. He had been doing a crapload of damage to Yankee forces, but they finally found him. They surrounded the tree and ordered him to surrender. I don't remember the exact wording of his response, but the meaning was basically "No - to heck with you!" He resumed firing and nailed several more before they hit him. Mind you, this was with, at best an early repeating rifle, but most likely a single-shot, muzzle-loaded MUSKET.

It's interesting the way the tactics changed over the years. Back in the days of Kings and Queens and Knights and such it was all hand to hand with incredibly heavy weapons. The only stand off was the archers. They of course took out a lot until someone figured out using shields that more or less gave interlocking cover.

Everything has developed to allow greater destructive force imposed on the enemy with minimal loss of life and limb. Though I don't like the reason or the results, I think military weapons and the way they are designed is absolutely fascinating. If I had it to do over again I would have applied myself like my teachers told me I was capable of and become a design engineer.

I read a novel once where conservative factions in the future had developed a time travel capability. They sent men back to the civil war and armed them with M-16's and all the ammo they needed. The Confederates were able to push back the North and even take the Capitol. The guys from the future were of course trying to alter the future to their advantage and wanted General Lee to do some stuff that was not very American. Lee of course thought the people from the future were all powerful because they told him that they had much bigger weapons they could use. Lee ended up calling their bluff and did what he felt was right. He accepted surrender from Lincoln and formed a truce with the North. Can't remember all but the point was how much of an advantage was given by just having automatic weapons. Grant figured out that attacking in mass was not a good idea and it lowered the effectiveness, but Lee still had the edge.

You might like one of my albums on my facebook (link is website under my Avatar) of my father, who we found out after he died that he had three bronze stars and marksman, Landed Omaha beach on D-day, battle of the budge, and liberated the underground V-engine factory and concentration camp. He spoke of his WWII experiences rarely, less then the fingers on one hand over 50 year time period.
