Hi! I haven't had any for about 6 years since I moved from Washington state to Florida. Previously had a mixed flock of abt 5 layers. Currently living in the suburbs so truly looking for backyard chickens. I mainly want them for eggs, but dont need a ton, and because even though we live in a populated area I want my kiddos to grow up with a semi country feel. I would love for the kiddos to eventually get into 4h...I'm leaning towards bantam cochin since they're supposed to be small and friendly and I think 4 would produce enough eggs for us. Looking forward to getting advise and meeting other chicken enthusiasts!

Welcome from Oregon. My first word of advice, if you want egg layers, Bantam's are probably not the route to go, because they lay reasonably small eggs. They're adorable and friendly, our neighbors have 2, but the eggs are a little small for regular consumption. You would need a lot of them. Do what's best for your family, hope everything works out.

The bantams here have been very good egg layers until about 7 years old.
It depends on how often you want to replace your flock in order to have reasonable egg production.
The egg machine breeds will lay a lot of eggs in the first two or three years.
