I'm a mom of three; a ten year old, 2 year old, and new born. I've always been self sufficient. living off the land with my squirrel, deer or fish I've killed or caught and cleaned myself to feed my family. until I moved to the city. now everything we eat is bought in a store outrageously expensive and pumped full of hormones and other garbage so... I just bought a house and have only an acre of land and decided I need to take matters into my own hands.

I've always loved birds. they are fascinating and amazing creatures. I've raised and hand fed cockatiels in my early twenties and also hatched chickens and ducks for a school project when I was in 7th grade too long ago to remember. I have some knowledge of birds but what I lack in knowledge I over compensate with common sense.

so it comes down to this. I am so pumped about getting to have birds again. and the fact these birds will provide my family and me with food is that much more exciting. I've come to this site to learn and gain as much knowledge as possible before starting this endeavor.

I've narrowed my options to quail or hens only of any breed. or both perhaps. but anyway nice to finally say hi.

BYC has a Buy-Sell-Trade in the Forum Nav near the bottom
of the list but to use this you will need to have 20 post and this
is as easily accomplished by just saying hello to 20 new members
and you just might find something you need as sometimes people
give away different types of poultry ....

X2 gander007's recommendation that a great place to start reading is the Learning Center, lots of good chicken keeping articles https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center and check out the BYC Breeds section for member reviews on a lot of breeds when you are trying to decide what hens you want... you might also like to check out the Quail and Self-Sufficiency forums https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/48/quail and https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/16177/diy-self-sufficiency
