Hi everyone, just joined. We had a tragic hatch. 12 eggs. First pipped and started zip om Monday. Dry & died Monday night. Membranes looked ok, so I left her be. Tuesday am, died. Second pipped Tuesday pm.Day 23. I watched like a hawk. After watching her get weaker, I decided to intervene. I finished her zip & ALL membrane was white as paper. Now shes up & peeping away like crazy, but all sticky & not fluffing out. All other eggs were dead. I waited too long. I dont want to chill her to clean her up, but dont want bacteria either. This is my first try incubating for a friend who couldnt keep her chickens brooding. What do I do??? HELP!!!

I'm sorry your incubation didn't go better. There are some very helpful members over on the Incubating & Hatching forum, post over there and see what they suggest:

Hi and welcome to BYC. NFCs suggestion is likely to get you the best responses - I personally have no experience using incubators, sorry.

Good luck in future hatches

Maybe temps and humidity were off. Some people use 2-3 thermometers and/or hygrometers - because the incubator may be unreliable. As to the chick you could give her a quick bath , in a warm room, with a little Dawn dish soap. Warm water. Work it in gently . Be sure to rinse well and dry with hair dryer on warm setting. Then put her back under brooder lamp.

Just need an inch or two of water in sink to wet her down - don't let her head drop into the water.

Welcome to the BYC forum! :frow

I'm sorry to hear of the hatching troubles! I've had my share of bad hatches before, I know how depressing they can be when things don't turn out. :hugs

@drumstick diva Gave you good advice on how to handle the sticky baby. You can keep her in a brooder under the heat lamp now (if you haven't already removed her from the incubator).

Good luck!
