Hi, I live in southern Australia in the foot of the mountain ranges ( about 600 metres above sea level). We get a lot of fog (or is it cloud?) , a lot of rain (1100 ml/year), only occasional light snow, and we are on lovely mineral rich red clay loam which grows abundant greens for them. I have 4 chooks, an australorp, rhode island red, plymouth rock and bantam black langsham. They get to free range everyday, and there are lots of composts and mulch beds hence worms, worms, bugs, grubs, spiders and worms. I've chosen them for their placid temperments ( I wanted a chickens I could pick up and check for mites etc withoutthem going into chook panic) and foraging tendency (-self helpers are happier, healthier, cheaper chooks), and cold hardiness. They've got a pen and house now which is adequate but designing a better one and bigger yard for them with a few runs. I'm a horticulturist and no- longer- practicing naturopath and I practice a lot of permie principles. I do try to design in top nutrition for them and a holistic approach to their health and wellbeing. I plan to get another pullet every 2 years, so we'll always have reasonable egg output and chickens of varying ages, who can live out their years on these green pastures; I'm a vegetarian and my omnivore partner doesn't want to do the chop so it's green all the way to the green dream for these lovely ladies ( Doris, Claudine, Lotte, Miss Hepburn).

Welcome by BYC, Compost Queen. This site has a lot to offer with plenty of information and good people to help you with your girls. I like your selection of breeds. I have the first three for my small backyard setup.

One recommendation: Adding new birds to an established flock may not be an easy thing. I recommend you search for "integration" to see how others have done it.
