My 5 chickens, three dogs and I live off grid on 10 acres between Show Low and Concho, Az . We only have a generator at the moment , getting solar when I get it figured out .. Anyway I joined because I need help in keeping water from freezing and chickens from freezing to death . It is in single digits at night but so far so good . Do they huddle to keep warm or just puff up thier fearthers ? Any way Im glad I found this group .

Hi there and welcome! Chickens tolerate cold as they are wearing down feather jackets. They do huddle on roost to stay warm. I'm so happy for your off grid life ( and a little jealous too.!) In my coop I use the deep litter method 7-12" deep with pine shaving and I think that helps with insulation from cold. Mine also roost on a 2x4 wide side up so they cover their feet with body. Last year I ran a 60 watt bulb at 3am to 9am to help with heat but if power were to ever go off I feel they won't be as tolerant of cold so I've opted to not have any heat source this year.
I have a heated pvc loop system with horizontal nipples for winter heat. If you'd like more info pm me for plans .
1. Do you have any power to coop. ?
2. How big is your coop?
3 and run or free range?
