Raising Chickens in the high desert is challenging!!! 100+ deg weather in summer, and -2 in the winter!!!

I'm using an old dog run and a make shift chicken coop I hobbled together inside the run.

I have a menagerie of chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, chuckar, and a guinea chic....The geese and ducks are separated, but the rest are clumped together. Seems to be working our fine!!!

I'm working on expanding the run area and planing to let the girls roam the one acre we live on, (as soon as I can get the dog to quit killing the chickens that get out!!!).

I get about a dozen eggs a day from the chickens, and 1 duck egg a day so far.

Right now they are on chicken feed, but "hopefully" will be getting them to "free range" before the end of the summer!!!

I also have rabbis, but that's another story!!!

I've already learned some interesting stuff from the site and got a few coop ideas!!! Thanks.

I hope to be contributing soon.

Hi and welcome to the flock.
Sounds like you have quite the menagerie on your little place!
Not sure if I am misreading your intent, but wanted to throw out there that with one acre it is unlikely you will be able to eliminate the need to continue offering commercial feed once you are able to start ranging your flock.

By the way, not saying that you will do anything bad, but no fowl play

If you intend to free range your birds, the only way to keep your dog from killing them is to get rid of him or keep him locked up 24/7. He has proven he is a chicken killer and he isn't going to give that up. Dogs kill chickens often, but, you never hear about a chicken killing a dog. Which is more important to you????

The High Desert, in CA, as in Victorville, Hesperia, Apple Valley High Desert? If that is the case are you serious about it getting -2 degrees in the winter? I must have moved up here when it was warming up, in February lowest it got was 27 for me. Depending on what type of fencing you have around your property I would be very cautious about letting them free range. Coyotes can easily jump certain types of fencing. And welcome aboard the BYC! I am a newbie myself
