just joined this group to get help, tips and as a resource. Me and my husband moved to a 1 acre home in the country. We decided to raise some chickens in our backyard. Got a chicken coup from tractor supply and just bought our first chicks last week (they are about 5 weeks old). We live in North Texas, so its not too cold or too hot at this time of the year. Have been keeping the chicks in the garage in the brooder for the past week and plan to rehouse them in the coop this weekend. they are already 5-6 weeks old. If you have any great recommendations on how to or what not to do for a newbie please let me know! I am excited to share this journey with my husband!

Congrats on getting your first flock! Sometimes it can be helpful to chat with other members that share the same locality as yourself...you can find the TX state thread here:
Texas

Best of luck to you and if you have questions, always feel free to ask!

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

Good luck moving the chicks outside. Its easy enough to do. If you have an attached run, easy enough, move them in and let them venture out of the coop to the run when they are ready. If you don't have an attached run, then keep the chicks locked in the coop for several days. You want them to know that the coop is a safe place to be and will always want to return. If you just turn them out, they will be roosting in the trees and you will never get them down. They need to be trained to use the coop.

GREAT to have you aboard and welcome to our roost! :)
