One suggestion: Most of the media I deal with do not call us "chicken farmers". That's like calling someone with 4 dogs a "dog farmer" or someone who has 4 children a "daycare operator".
Yes we have a small percentage of our members that raise a hundreds of chickens just for meat and eggs which could be considered "farmers" but the vast majority of us (and those represented in your story) are not farmers. They are raising pets, just like dogs, cats, birds, goldfish, etc. The big difference: Chickens are the pet that makes you breakfast.
Oh, and I really wanted to add: Going to city councils, etc. and requesting permission to "farm chickens" or to "allow chicken farming" is a very bad idea! Using the term "farm" often scares neighbors and council members into thinking about hundreds of chickens crammed into tiny areas and cared for as livestock vs. pets.
Most of those looking to raise backyard chickens in a suburban environment only want 4-8 pet birds, not to establish a "farm".
I agree with Nifty-Chicken....
For me, I am not a "chicken farmer" and my friends that have chickens are not "farmers" either.
For my family, we only have a small number and to use they are our "other children". My son and I interact, play and love them just like any other pet. We know them by the sounds they make, and with all the love and care we give them; the chickens return the love back to us.
I know when I hear "chicken farming" I think of Mass amounts in small areas, lots of noise, smell, and mass production.....that is one image you may not want to use.
Best of luck and again
Here is a Picture of 4 of my "other kids"...they are Bantams, and I love each and every one of them
