I have wanted to have chickens for years and have always worried about zoning and stuff like that. With all that is going on in the world I decided the heck with it and get some chicks. I purchased 4 buff Orpingtons. They are supposed to be pullets but I know there is no guarantee. I will eat any cockerels and if I can't do it I'll take them to my friend who has been on this site for years. She has already offered to take them for meat.
The woman at the feed store was very helpful in helping me chose supplies. She said I would be fine to use a plate for the chick starter. I'm keeping them in a dog crate with pine bedding, a waterer, the chick starter and a heat lamp. They have been eating and chirping. I have 2 German Shepherds. They have sniffed the crate a few times but don't seem overly interested. I also have a cat who hasn't gotten near the crate yet.
I'll need to either buy a coop and run or manage to make one. My niece's boyfriend is very handy and going to look at plans and see if he can build one for me. I'm sure I'll have lots of questions.
