I separated each of them from other healthy chicks. One of them just got injured nails and fingers but it started to eat and drink as usual. however, the other ones has the whole leg til feet totally injured. it is now swollen and my chick is weak. i really dun noe how to cure it, actually 3 got attacked and one is dead- the whole intestines are dug out and is eaten by the rat. I am really sad and i cried but the injured one is the one i am extremely worried about NOW. It's not eating nor drinking for an hour. What should i do? Please help me.

I think that chick needs some antibiotics. Have a look in the Emergencies & Diseases section and good luck!

I would take the injured leg and wrap it in a tight towel and douse the whole leg in rubbing alcohol to prevent disease. I would also do this to the one with the injured foot. For the badly injured one, put it with the other one that was attacked (to prevent loneliness that can kill a chick believe it or not) and force feed the badly injured one: water and extremely ground up chick feed or (soft) chick mash. Gently knead the chick's throat to help the food go down. Good luck and I'm so sorry for your loss!!!

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan :D

Rubbing alcohol is very irritating and should NEVER be used on open wounds or abrasions. Clean then with warm water and mild soap, then apply an antibiotic ointment.

And even more important, find out how the rat got to your chicks and secure your brooder. Good luck.

Alcohol kills bacteria and germs. Sometimes warm water and soap won't kill all of the bacteria. You are better off rinsing it off with warm water, yes; but also dab a cotton ball into rubbing alcohol and dabbing the wound gently at least and dress the wound with some gauze.
