Hi everyone. This is so great to be able to do research and learn from all of you pros out there. I am in the midst of getting my backyard set up for several things right now. How many of you prefer a walk in chicken run as opposed to a half fence kind. I can't let them have complete free range due to other animals but I want them to have cover from predators also. My dream has been to be a farm girl and now at 56 I just might be able to make that happen. LOL Are any of you from down SETX way?

Hi and welcome to BYC and congrats on your new hobby. A walk-in run wins hands-down imo.

Welcome :welcome Nice to have you here! I personally prefer walk in coop and run. Never had more than 10 chickens though. Run has a metal roof to keep rain, snow and predators out. I let my chickens have the run of the yard as long as we don’t have horrible weather. If we have a lot of predator activity I may have to put them in the coop/run for a bit; the girls also don’t like deep snow and if the path I shovel isn’t to their liking or they don’t come out the run they have a safe spot to hang out

How many chickens do you plan to get?
Well, I can say after having dealt with a short little run for almost a couple years, it was a real hassle getting on your hands and knees to reach anything! My new coop has a walk run and there is absolutely no comparison. Walk in is the way to go if you have the means to do so. That will also give you the opportunity to add perches and other enrichment that wouldn't fit as well in a low-to-the-ground space.
Best wishes with your planning!
