Hi everyone,
I am from Busby, Alberta in Canada. I live on a quarter section which is really more of a glorified acreage. We rent out about half the land to a neighbour and keep the rest for my menagerie. I have 8 assorted horses and ponies, 2 pot Bellied pigs, some turkeys and a gander named Peter, not to mention the expected dogs and cats.
We had some white turkeys several years ago which we raised for thanksgiving. I really enjoyed having them around, especially when they went for walks with the dogs (and goat and cats) and I. So this spring I went to our local odd and unusual sale and bought a pair of Bourbon Reds for outrageously inflated prices. The hen laid 14 eggs and managed to hatch out 6, of which 1 survived. The Tom also died. I'm pretty sure he was an old cull as he was never very energetic.
So a couple of weeks ago I went to the fall sale and bought a Royal Palm hen and a Pair of Black Spanish, for much more reasonable proces. The black hen was not in good shape when I got her home and didn't make it much longer but the other 2 are both doing well. (That's also when I got Peter the goose).
They all live loose in the yard and follow us around whenever we go outside. I will have to fix them up a place in the barn for the winter. I will take some of them back to the sale in the spring and try to get another tom. I'd like to get a Royal Palm Tom as I think they are so pretty, but I don't want to part with my Red hen so she may just have to share.
I could go on, but will not write and essay for my first post here.

Sounds like you have had quite the experience with Turkeys.

. Hope you won't have any more losses

With age comes experience! The poults got scared when my husband went past with the lawn mower and drowned themselves in the adults water pail. Who would have though they could jump that high? I have found that books aren't very helpful if you are trying to raise pet turkeys as opposed to future meals.

Yes it's truly amazing how far they can jump. I have noticed that there is not much information out there for people raising them for pets either. I raised two this year for pets. One died and the other started being picked on by my geese so I found him another pet home. I do miss their personality though.

Hi name is/was Jeffrey. He's a young mule I bought at auction. I sold him this spring as he needed something to do besides hanging around and getting into things. He was a real character!
