Been lurking here for a while, reading and pondering. Well today I will probably pick up a few chicks at the local feed store to raise out.

I live in the city but am a backyard farmer with raised garden squares and several fruit trees. Been wanting chickens for a while but wasn't sure I was ready to take them on. When I read the article about composting with chickens - that did it. I am in !!

Just think - eggs, veggies, soil improvement and occasional meat. A step closer to self sufficiency. I cannot imagine anything better!

Newly retired and caring for the g-children. They're gonna love it, too !!

Many questions to follow, I am sure.

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects. — Robert A. Heinlein

Thanks to everyone for making me feel so welcome. I now have 10 chicks. I got 4 mixed breed bantams (straight run), 3 Buff Orpington (straight run) so I may have some boys in this group. I also got 1 Brown Leghorn, 1 Black Astralorp, 1 Rhode Island Red, sexed as females. I want a Easter Egger and a Maran. Hope to get next week.

I have them in a plastic tub with a warming light, shavings, food and water. They are eating like crazy and cheeping away so it looks like all is good so far.

My 7 year old g-daughter is excited about them, but insists she could never eat one of them. They must know because when out of the tub the run to her already. Seven month old Landon would love to hold one and he is very irritated that he can't - you can see it in the pic.
