I’m sorry I’m not sure which of those materials is better. We happen to use pine pellets/shavings but we live in a very different climate than you. I used to live in Florida (Palm Beach County) but I didn’t have chickens then!

For our coops we use horse bedding pellets. Most free range but for any pens, it's dirt so they can dust bathe and laugh at me trying to make grass plots for them.
