Hi!

Unfortunately, in this instance, my back yard is full of above ground pool! The side yard is fenced in but mainly for the dogs. The front yard......well that would probably be taboo as far as the city is concerned. Besides, the preditors there might be two-legged with no feathers and that could lead to lots of trouble all the way around. Hubby has retired now, but his first priority is replacing my old bathtub with a shower stall. That should keep him out of trouble for a while. LOL! Next, weather permitting, I'll be after him to work on hen house. Up in our woods there's just not enough flat space, and no lawn, to make a chicken tractor useful. Besides, there would be a lot of trees in the way. Otherwise I'd be on that quick if just to get rid of the ticks, fleas, and chiggers! Of course, THIS winter is really cold and that might take care of a lot of them, I hope. I've decided after reading a lot of experiences of others that I shouldn't start with a small hen house, but at least a medium sized one since once you have a few you always want more! I really want to do it right the first time and make it as automated as possible as far as pop-door, watering, and feeding go. I'll want a fairly large, secure, covered run for them, too. I've done a little research and I've found a hatchery that's fairly local so that I won't have to order a minimum number and I'll be able to pick out what I want, I hope, and take them home myself. Our son and family are living on our woods property and they can help keep an eye on them for me if they want to get free eggs! I'm taking an online permaculture course now, and I'm planning all sorts of sectors and guilds. One of the things I want to do is have a worm composter, so I may even have extra red wigglers for snacks for the hens. I also hope to set up acquculture in my greenhouse (if they ever get it all set up). The possibilities are endless!

Have a great day and stay warm!

I think I've got Hubby talked into extending the wooden fence forward along the side yard and building a small coop and run here in town! I'd like to start out with three baby chicks, only I can't seem to find a hatchery anywhere near here in south central Kentucky! I've looked in the actual phone book and online until my eyes are all blurry. I'd love to be able to GO to a hatchery and pick up just three hens. (I think a cockerel would give me away and then they'd have to go.) He'll only build a small coop for three, so I can't order online because right now the smallest amount I can see to buy is 15 and then they're straight run, so roosters could be among them! What to do........what to do.
