Hmm, mess up at the store? Is this a Welsummer?

Oh I should note too- that she looks long because I posed her that way. I try and take photos of them every few weeks to document their growth, and she was rather nervous for this one. I just lifted her up and she held that pose for me. She is usually not that long and lanky and in fact the other photos of her she is nearly laying down and squatting.

I think she may be in the middle of a growth spurt.

Maybe you'll be lucky and have a Welsummer with great legs. It will be obvious once she's maturing -- Leghorns get those giant white ear lobes, Welsummers have red ears.

since we are on the subject, I have a chick about 5 weeks old don't know if it's a welsummer or brown leghorn also but after seeing your chick I'm thinking mine is a welsummer. They look different

6littlechicks, I don't think it's either of those. The skin looks white and the feather coloring is off too. Not sure what you have.

lol, I'm getting all mixed guesses on this one. poor thing has 5 names, lol. I'm keeping it no matter what it is. It's from the banty bin at tsc. It's the same size as my 6 day old australorps. I'll try next week.

Hi Bocktobery 10!

I agree with other folk's assessment of Welsummer or Light Brown Leghorn. Wellies do have yellow legs and my last one I got from a hatchery had huge Ronald MacDonald yellow feet as a chick. Mine doesn't look like a SOP hen--it looks like at some point some Game or Leghorn was infused into her line. She still lays terracotta eggs and she is currently my best layer. Love Wellies.

You will be able to tell which she is before the eggs come as Wellies have red ears and Leghorns have white.

Why is it that it is so hard to wait? ! I'm excited to know what she is and I will post back here once I know. I'm hoping for Welsummer. It seems to make the most sense since there were some being sold at the same time in the store. I have my fingers crossed.. but even so, it would be neat to have a Leghorn. I love her despite what she is.

6littlechicks,

Yours looks more like my Speckled Sussex. I"m not an expert, but it seems like yours has a bit of white on the chest and reminds me of the one I posted here. I had read that SS can look like Welsummers and Brown Leghorns when they are chicks. How did you obtain yours and what is it supposed to be? Whatever it is, it looks like it might be a roo. ?? Again, I'm absolutely no expert.

dretd,

I'd love to see a pic of your Welsummer if you could post it!

debid,

Are Welsummers supposed to have yellow legs? The farm store in which I purchase my chicks from usually does a decent job at getting good stock.

Do you have a photo of her with her chick feathering? That would help.

This is what (female) Welsummer chicks look like..

Also my Welsummers, (which came from Whitmore, a respected breeder) have quite yellow legs. I'm going to see if I have any photos of them as juveniles and will post it if I do.

It's a Welsummer chick. The frame is all wrong for a Leghorn.

Edit: Well ok, unless the hatchery is being particularily sloppy with it's breeding. You can never tell with hatcheries sometimes.

Here are some photos of my supposed "speckled sussex"- the first photo is of the one in question ( the one suspected of being a Welsummer) She is about 3 to 5 days old in this photo. (I had named her "Sparrow" simply because she looked like a little sparrow. Not sure if I will keep that name for her, but at the time I named her that just to have a name.)

another pic a few days later...

And now, here is the Speckled Sussex in comparison. (Remember that the one above was supposed to be a Speckled Sussex)

First pic is from first day (about 3 to 5 days old) and the second pic is a few days later. They are similar, but "Rose" the Speckled Sussex has pink legs.
