Hmm, mess up at the store? Is this a Welsummer?

anyone think it could be an oegb? the only thing about mine that screams roo is the comb but I'm really feeling pullet. I'm keeping it either way because I can have a roo and we don't have one yet but it just isn't acting like a roo. maybe it's a pullet that is just maturing fast or maybe it's normal for whatever breed it is. Funny you call yours sparrow, I've been calling mine finch, lol. I Was looking at its feathering and the hackles coming in are black round tipped feathers but the pattern is gold "v" design on them?

Why is it that it is so hard to wait? !   I'm excited to know what she is and I will post back here once I know.   I'm hoping for Welsummer.  It seems to make the most sense since there were some being sold at the same time in the store.  I have my fingers crossed.. but even so, it would be neat to have a Leghorn.   I love her despite what she is.

     Yours looks more like my Speckled Sussex.  I"m not an expert, but it seems like yours has a bit of white on the chest and reminds me of the one I posted here.   I had read that SS can look like Welsummers and Brown Leghorns when they are chicks.   How did you obtain yours and what is it supposed to be?  Whatever it is, it looks like it might be a roo.   ??   Again, I'm absolutely no expert.

      Are Welsummers supposed to have yellow legs?    The farm store in which I purchase my chicks from usually does a decent job at getting good stock.

I don't think it matters what they had in the store because on the 6th in one town we got what was supposed to be 10 Cornish cross, and the next day we got 5 leghorns from a store one town over... One of the Cornish from the first store has ended up also being a leghorn, but the store we got the meat birds from had no leghorns...perhaps they had just run out, or only had a few so they put them all in together? But there were no other whit chicks except the Cornish...they all started out the sane size, but neat birds grow ridiculously quick so in a few days after getting all the chicks I was going to move the meaties to a different brooder and only 9 were all big and what not. A couple weeks later and it turns out we do have 6 leghorns and only 9 Cornish...don't know how

Honestly, I think that happens often. They have a few chicks from the previous week's shipment when the new ones arrive so they put them in together thinking all of the employees know what's what and then someone doesn't.

The patterning is female, duck wing. Never mind the comb, boys don't have rosy chests with brown backs so unless the chest changes dramatically as the feathering completes, it's a she.

This is my Speckled Sussex. I was concerned that she might be a roo because of the white chest and very thick legs and up right stance. Even at 3 months most of her speckles were on her front. She is now 6 months old, lays beautiful big light brown eggs and is speckled everywhere. I wish I had a current picture to show you how much she has changed.

yay, I knew it looked to female to be a roo! You are my favoritest person of the day, lol. It's got skinny little legs to. Now to name her...

I guess it is possible that mine in question still could be a Speckled Sussex. She just doesn't have any speckles which is what concerned me. But her feathers coming in seem to state she is something other than a SS. I never had this breed before, so I really do not know what to expect.

I highly doubt that the chick I grabbed from the store was a left over from another store or another shipment. The chicks were all the same size and they all looked so much the same. The only reason why I grabbed the two I did was because the other one (the one in question) looked a bit different than the others. I did this so that I could tell them apart.

When we got the Cornish they all looked the same..same size, same feathering, but the Cornish kept getting bigger and the line leghorn never did

Here is Autumn at about 4 weeks next to the mixed breed roo (she replaced our first Wellie, Summer):


And as an adult--look closely and you will see 1 cm spurs. Her color is washed out because of the lighting:

Here, I've dug up pictures for you. IMO, SS are one of the hardest breeds to sex by juvenile appearance.

My Maggie at 8 weeks (you can see the white on her head and the little wattles that showed up at 4 weeks). No speckles on her back yet but she has a couple of solid white feathers at the wingtips. Those are very common in hatchery stock.

And then at 16 weeks when she was declared a cockerel by the folks on the Sussex board based on white face, comb/wattle size, and iridescence in the tail.

She didn't lay until 32 weeks but she was undoubtedly a pullet.

And I also have Welsummers with spurs! I thought it was odd and several "helpful" folks on BYC suggested that they were either much older (um, I got them as chicks, I know how old they are) or have hormonal problems. Really? All four from the same source have hormonal problems? Glad to see someone else has a Wellie girl with spurs so maybe mine aren't so odd. Violet's PULLET spurs (they're a good inch+ now).
