Agreed... My retired pasture horse that I keep at home costs me around $5k a year. From what I can gather OP wants to show and doesn't have property to keep the horse on. My competition horse EASILY costs me $15 - 20k when I factor in board, lessons, shows, vet, farrier, supplements, etc. I understand that I'm probably on the upper end of the cost spectrum with my competition horse. I take a lesson with a big name trainer every week, show full seasons at recognized shows, and ride at a level that necessitates supplements to keep my horse in top physical condition... Perhaps OP is not there yet but if showing is her goal you can get to that price point extremely quickly. IMO 5 - 6k is really about the bare minimum you can expect to spend to keep a horse healthy, happy, and well-fed with regular vet and farrier care.

This
gives you what you would pay for boarding, or at home, show fees, tack, vaccinations, farrier, supplements, vaccinations...

My bare bones MINIMUM... for doing self care for 3 horses and 2 ponies is 6700 a year, with my own truck and trailer, my own tack... no indoor or outdoor arena, I either ride on the farm OR trailer to ride. No bedding needed, no showing in the near future, but if I do, its at least 50-100 PER Show, unless its a fun show. I still need a coggins in my area to go to shows and that in my area is 27 minimum a year. I do have show clothes and some tack, most if old and very used but I keep in in very good condition.
BUT I have kept horses for many years, I do my own shots, as much of my own vet care as I can, and where I keep my horses at I have learned some old school methods of treating somethings and those methods WORK!

Don't rush into horse ownership, lease a horse, do a half lease or lessons, and if you really want to be around them more, become an intern at a horse show barn, or at a therapeutic riding center, helping disabled people to ride horses.

Hope this helps.
