(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We started our flock about 2 years ago (February 2016). That was my first experience and I was immediately addicted; my husband is from Sweden and was raised with chickens, I think he introduced me to the idea!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Currently 16 (14 layers and 2 bantam roos) with 16 chicks arriving next week (Jan-Feb 2018). I think the most we have had at one time is 26, but had some losses over the last year.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Right now, a frizzle sizzle, Australorps, Buff Orps, Welsummers, NH Reds, A Swedish Flower Hen, an EE, A blue (splash) Andalusian, a Barred Rock, and our 2 mini/bantam roos (a gorgeous one-of-a-kind sizzle and a frizzled cochin). Arriving next week are (not all true breeds) some more EE's, a Cream Legbar, a Speckled Sussex, a Black Copper Marans, a Golden Cuckoo Marans, an Ancona, GL and SL wyandottes, a couple more Australorps (my hub's fave), an Austrawhite (Australorp/White Leghorn cross from MPC) and a BBS Favaucana (cross from MPC), plus a couple "mystery" chickens TBD!
Always in our hearts (and sometimes in our bellies): 2 EE pullets, a Golden Cuckoo Marans pullet, Silkie boy and girl, 2 Sizzle boys, and 2 bantam cochin girls. Plus our beloved Australorp "accidental" rooster who was magnificent but was just too loud when he crowed, and we didn't want to draw more attention to our yard or irk the neighbors :-(
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Online search looking for answers to questions the first year. Plus it's fun to talk about my chickens and hear from others who like to talk about theirs!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Art, camping and hiking, gardening, reading, adventures with the kids, gardening, cooking and eating, travel when we could afford it...
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We have 2 cats and a beehive, and are a homeschooling and "backyard suburban homesteading" family. We also rent out the guest suite of our house on AirBnB, so we keep busy!
