I fought it for a long time but I too have come to really love the brooder heat plates. I have two of the Premier One heat plates. Years ago, I also built two of the old time Ohio hover brooders. I haven't needed them in a few years but I may need them again this year when I start hatching more than 50 chicks at a time.

I decided to invest in the heat plates when I did the math. They paid for themselves over the electric cost of heat lamps.

What breed is the chicks? Very cool looking!

The little grey ones are half silkie, half ameraucana.

I will personally never go back to the heat lamps. Decreased fire risk as well!

You probably won't get 30 chicks but after a couple days, you'll need a larger water fount.


First hatch will only be 4 eggs, Then 19 a few days later and then 7 after that. The older ones will teach the new ones about food and water. All eggs look really good at this point.

Oh i have a Polish x Amercucana in the coop, she is 8 months old. Cool mix you got there! The hen is the blue one, very shy!
