Holy Mole! Pix of Yolk Peritonitis - this is what killed Tammy

A few days ago, I wrote that one of our hens, Tammy, was crawling around with what appeared to be an enormous egg stuck. She fought hard since Thursday and was on her last breaths this afternoon when DH finally put her down.

So, we did an autopsy.

First, lots of clear liquid ran out of her.

A good two or three ounces.

Then we saw this mass.

The poor girl didn't stand a chance. A Golden Comet, so she maybe weighed 4 lbs. This thing was the size of a large avocado.

She was definitely an internal layer. I just regret on putting her down Friday morning.

OMG That is huge! I'm SO sorry for your loss. That poor girl! Must have been so painful for her. So do you know what causes this or does it just happen?

So the egg was inside the mass? What was the mass made out of? How does something like that happen?

I'm so sorry you had to endure this. Thank you for posting though, so others can learn for future issues.
