I usually hear them howling and carrying on at night and thats all ok by me cause my chickens are locked up by then and my cats are inside..ect...

so is it normal for it to be alone?.. it was a single coyote...

last time I seen them was about 5 years ago, there (when my malamute chased after them) but they were across the corn field and it was at 6am and there were about 7 of them

Most of time, coyotes do hunt alone even when part of a family group. Group behavior (howling) either reinforcing social bonds or signal to rival groups and loner that family is strong and united. Not all coyotes at a given time are part of a social group. They are the equivalent of a lone wolf that is wondering about between / through coyote territories trying to find a mate and patch of land for them selves.

Your coyotes may have some grey wolf in them so they will run a bit larger (size wise) and in packs with more than typical breeding pair. In that case, your typical "coyote" experiences will differ from those of us living to your southwest. Yours will be bigger and tougher

great i get the coyotes on steroids! lol

I live in North Texas and see coyotes frequently during the day. Seems normal.

Not really this time of year--they're hungry and getting ready to yelp.

getting ready to yelp?... cause heck I will make them yelp if I see them again...

do you mean whelp?

We have always seen coyotes during the day. I agree that it's normal. My little JR was just killed by a coyote in December, because he didn't have the sense to stay back with our other dog. Our "other dog" is a border collie x australian cattle dog who sticks by the back door like glue when he hears the 'yotes howling.

ME TOO!!!!
I live in Texas, about 30-40 miles south of Dallas/Ft Worth.......I've seen lone 'yotes in the middle of the day trotting across my pasture. When I hear a pack howling, it's always in the deep of the night, when mom & dad are teaching the yote pups how to hunt. Those buggers (I'm really thinking a different name for them!!!) took my chickens, most of my cats and got my 8 yr old wire fox terrier.........while my border collie hugged the front door and begged to come in.
Now I have a great pyrennes and a part pyr protecting my place. Just got a new pry pup to add to the security team. Haven't had a yote on my place since I've had prys!!!! They work 24/7 for dog food.....plus the eggs I give them, and they smile and wag their tails when I come home.
What could be better??
